Hey dudes

Had car in for service today at my mechanic. he changed the aux fan belt and tensioners due to the bird chirping. he noticed that AC unit is being driven all the time and wondered if it was meant to be working on a clutch. Anyone know??

Should be on a clutch yes. Have you tried it with the AC off?

The pulley runs all the time but the hub should only lock up with the AC on.

hi mate

well the AC runs only when I switch the button on/off. its not ON all the time. All he said was that the pully was connected to the unit all the time and turning all the time and he didnt think he thought it right. Ill ring him in the morning and tell him what you said and see if he can be a bit clearer.

all best

Shaun

Hey Ancy babes

right he said he turned the belt by hand while under the car and saw that the shaft of the AC unit turned too. that was with engine off. Would that be correct??

I don't know what model wardude has, the the 3rd generation RAV4 uses a variable displacement compressor that always runs when the engine is running. There is no clutch.

mines a 06 plate T180

Then you have the variable displacement compressor. Here's a good explanation as to how it works:

Our diesel heaters are slightly different in that they have an electric element heater to speed up the warm up process. However, James is quite right and the pulley is fixed on our compressor.

Sorry for the duff info shaun!!!
