Tyre Wear

Hey all .

I noticed recently that my front tyres are wearing unevenly. Speciffically, the outer edge on both front wheels, one a fair bit more than the other. Looks like I'll have to replace one of them as it is getting a bit too smooth on the mentioned outer edge. I quite like them, they are the original Bridgestone Duellers and I find them nice and quiet (comparing to yokohamas) Also, I don't really do much mileage and having to replace them prematurely is mega annoying (and expensive).

I tried some googelage, but I am getting a bit confused with all them camber, castor, toe-in out fings

Anyone had the same experience? Anyone fixed it? (thought I check here before I go to the tyre place)

Thanks!

If the outer edges of the tread are wearing on both front tyres then you have too much toe-in (i.e. the fronts of the wheels are pointing in towards the centreline of the car too much) Most cars need a certain amount of toe-in so that when the necessary slack in the various suspension components is taken up as the car moves fwd, the tyres run parallell to the direction of motion. The amount of toe-in is also determined by the handling characteristics that the manufacturer wants to achieve. There could also be excessive camber (the extent to which the top of the tyre leans out or in depending upon design parameters) but that's pretty unlikely as it is far less adjustable (and seldom needs adj'g) than wheel alignment, i.e. toe-in.

If you go to a reputable tyre depot, they will be able to adjust the toe-in. Preferably if you do some research on best tyre prices first you might get the wheel alignment thrown into the deal.

Interesting that you find the Duellers quiet. I have them on both our RAVs (and have always used them) but I wouldn't call them particularly quiet. Certainly they wear & grip well and are reasonably priced. I'd suggest that you have a look at Continental's range; they recently brought out a new SUV tyre and it got good write-ups in a couple of tests that I read, especially for quietness.

Good luck,

Firemac

I had that on my Yaris, but when I started running it with slightly higher tyre pressures it seemed to even out the wear quite well :)

I'd get the wheels done by laser alignment first... front and back. Then you can sort out the tyres after. get the garage you choose to report to you on what they found.

I have had it done on all my cars by my local specialist and even watched them do it to one. I found it was worth it in the improvements to the handling.
