Rav4 D4D Injector Problems

Hi All, just joined and already used the site twice for some very useful info so thank you in advance. Anyway, I have a '57 plate Rav4 D4D that has only done 55k; however, the 'check 4x4', 'check VSC' and 'check engine system' lights are on for the 3rd time in the 2 years we have had the car. The first 2 times was down to a faulty sensor on one of the wheels which Toyota fixed; however, this time they are saying it is down to 2 faulty injectors (Nos 1 & 2 if it matters) and are quoting £1200 for replacements and fitting. We are waiting for Toyota UK to reply whether they can contribute to the cost since it is only 1 yr out of warranty and I wouldn't have expected the injectors to go after such a short time/mileage. Has anyone else had a similar problem or does anyone have any suggestions? Many thanks. David

Hello David

That's bad luck - my commiserations.

Mine is an 07 reg and the injectors on it needed replacing after about 30k miles. There were no warning lights but they clattered terribly and I was told that there was a known fault with the injectors on cars of that vintage. On later models a modified version was used. Of course your fault may be of a different nature altogether but I do remember being told that it was an expensive repair, and I was lucky that my car was still under warranty.

Hi Charlie,

No, we haven't had a second opinion yet but I intend to get at least one. I'm waiting to see what Toyota UK come back with first. I'll let you know how I get on though! Regards, David

Thanks Maria, that's good to know and gives me some more ammunition when I speak to Toyota UK or even Which Legal Service depending upon their response! We love the car and it's great in the snow (essential where we live) but if it is going to continue giving hassle I feel a Qashqai coming on....!

Ask them to approach it in a different way. Tell them you are not satisfied with the oil consumption and they are authorised to fit you a new engine. Injectors come within the scope of the program and could therefor be lost in the cost. It would then work out free to you.

as a last try, try to use STP diesel injector cleaner.

This type

I think you should buy it cheaper, it cost less in your local store, because of P&P.

My friend was using a cheap diesel, and has the same problems with 2 cars. This has definatelly solved the problem.

I am smarter :P, using only market-leader petrol stations (not the cheap TESCO and so on...), since i was speaking with the developer of diesel directly from ARAL. No problems yet, but from time to time (every 10 000?kms), i am using the cleaner also, as a prevention.

Read the manual on the bottle before using.

Good luck!

you have several ways:

- check with alternator / Battery prime voltage;

- check with performance of each injector control solenoids by direct connecting -- just to understand whether they do work;

- 4x4 - means el magnetic clutch;

- VSC -- this might be a problem with sensor contact and its purity;

- try to apply an injectors cleaner and race the car to burn residues out;

- fur sure the way offered by Anchorman might win problem on the root.

cheers/Igor

Agree totally ! My engine was changed about four weeks ago and the injectors were also changed along with a few other parts ..... It seems a shame to have to go those sort of tactics though and an oil consumption test was done on My car to determine just how much oil it was using which was a lot !!

I still cant believe just two injectors and setting them up can be 1200 quid ?? Anchs What is Your take on this ? 1200 quid flaming Ada !!

Charlie

I believe the injectors can cost about £500 each. They don't just plug and play, the old ones have to be sent away and the new ones are calibrated to the settings from the old. I suppose if you add some labour you are up and running with the £1200 sketch.

They are £445 a pop, not unusual for todays modern piezo high pressure injectors, gone are the days where you popped to the local diesel specialist and have the tips cleaned

Kingo :thumbsup:
