Fuel Fil Location?

Now , i consider myself fairly competant with a set of spanners, but...........................

where the chuff is the fuel filter ? 1999 2.0 rav thing (wifes). Started at tank , worked me way along fuel lines to throttle body. Nowt.

Lifted back seats, inspection plates ? nowt

Went and bought a filter and it looks like a 'tank' filter as opposed to an 'inline' one so im guessing due to lack of inspection plate its a tank out job.

Throws up CEL if you boot it. I only drive it occassionally and then its 8 miles on motorway then gert big hill. Mrs hasnt got a clue when light comes on as shes a girl and dosnt look. 2 fault codes that both pertain to engine running lean , no work has been done on it recently/nothing disturbed. Checked inlet tract/hoses all good. No obvious/evident leaks from manifolds etc.

Fact that fuel filter looks like it could be more than a plug and play job i am hoping it is just down to a blocked/old/dodgy filter that has been ignored. Although it has full history and one previous owner, latter part is independant garage so im *hoping* its running lean due to filter being bunged- this is kind of corroborated by the light coming on when i start asking for fuel when foot is put down.

So , where is the bleedin' thing? im guessing tank and tank out job , please tell me i wrong!!

I'm assuming you have a 4.1 RAV? A MK1 2.0 petrol version?

If so the fuel filter is an inline version and have a feeling it is mounted low on the bulkhead area, follow the fuel line from the rail down the bulkhead and you should come across it

Hi Mich,I once had a car which had dirt?in the fuel tank(a long time ago) and,as i was unable at the time to rectify the fault quickly,I used to disconnect the fuel line at the pump and blow back gently through it with a foot pump.

The reason I mention this is,would this prove if you did indeed have a clogged filter,before dropping the tank?

In those days fuel filters used to clog, but I think the underground fuel tanks are a lot cleaner now.

If you do have to drop the tank, contact a member called Charlie Farlie as he has just done that job.

Best not ask him why!! :thumbsup:

Cant say im an anorak and no which model is which but its the 'new shape' dont know what year they changed over ?!?!?!?

As per oe post , there is no inline filter and on buying a new filter it is quite obviously designed to sit in top of tank/pump/sump - its is not your boggo standard ali 'inline' type. ECP did it from numer plate.

however, looking on ebya to find a pic i can not find one similar , they all look like the version similar to diesel filters.

am i a !Removed!? anyone give me the exact loaction/position of the filter?piccies? have looked and looked and looked again, am i being thick?

Its a funny looking thing fixed to the bulkhead. Follow the pipes back from the engine.

Take a look at this thread to find out which generation RAV4 you have. If it's a 4.3, the filter is in the tank:

hi and thanks chaps!

its a 4.2. 2.0 petrol. Now am i proper special. there is something near to the bulkhead + NS suspesnion strut top. Black platic square cannister that i just presumed was some sort of breather cannister. Is this it and its been stareing me in the face?

HUGGGGGE ask, anyone got a pic they can load with a finger/arrow pointing to it?

Ah well thats easy. You originally said 1999 which would make it a 4.1 but now with this info I can tell you there is nothing other than a non serviceable strainer inside the fuel tank. Stop looking.

1999 , Y reg , i was close (as you can tell , i drive/prefer classics :thumbsup: )

mmmmm, so back to these fault codes. Doris has eaten/lost the bit of paper with codes on but from googling them they both pertain to the engine running lean. The garage whom did it for her put them on the bit of paper along with the possible causes the reader had thrown up in idiiots guide/what to check.

Injectors/pump/ in + ex manifold leaks / MAF er, few others, you get the idea.

Had a good old shuftie and as per original post, no work been done recently/nothing disturbed. still looked at hoses etc and all good. No signs of manifolds blowing (or sucking :eek: ).

Is there anything that is common to Ravs that is an obvious/easy/'always' fix ?

Going to take out MAF and clean it. Its intermitantly throwing up CEL on dashboard. Hasnt appeared since fault was cleared though and i only drive it on motorway then up a big hill at end of motorway and it was gutless when i drove it last when ligth was on.

Doris hasnt got an idea, as previous, shes a bird and knows how to hoover it and pootles about town.

Possible failing MAF thrn maybe ? (hopefully as its prob least expensive :yes: )

O2 sensors? Measure with a multimeter across the two black wires. Expect circa 15 Ohms. Open circuit heaters are a fail, and prevent the fueling from going closed loop.
