Few Questions About The New Yaris Sr

Hi everyone, I've got a couple of questions about the new generation Yaris SR. Take it easy on me seeing as I'm a newbie :)

I've noticed this "follow me home" headlamps dotted around on Toyota website and spec pages but could someone please explain to me what they are as I've heard a few different things. Also, what type of bulbs will the new one have? The white (new looking) halogen type bulbs or the usual style creamy coloured looking bulbs. Funny that I can't seem to find anything at all on the internet about the lights. Just me being curious really as when I test drove the car, it was daytime and didn't think to look.

Many thanks in advance for your responses.

"Follow me home" lights just means that the headlights or fog lights stay on for a short time after you turn the engine off and get out of the car, so that you can see to walk to your house and then they turn themselves off automatically. Effectively its just a time delay on turning the lights off...

I would guess that the standard bulbs will look the normal slightly creamy colour because Toyoa will fit "standard" normal bulbs.

The halogen bulbs that look whiter are always "aftermarket" bulbs that you pay a premium for so there's no way that the manufacturer will pay the extra and fit them as standard.

First thing I do when getting a car is swap the headlight bulbs for the best "extra-bright" bulbs I can find.

Osram Nightbreaker look about the best bet at the moment. Not sure if the new Yaris uses an H4 bulb (like the old one) or an H7 bulb, but there are Osram Nightbreaker versions of both available that put out nearly double the light of a normal bulb and they're available for about £24-£27 online

I'm using Philips Extreme Vision at the moment (the older +80% versions, and they're certainly very white...)

Thanks for your response on both questions, clears it all up. I'll have a look at both them bulbs, now I'll just need to find out if they are indeed the H4 or H7. Do you by any chance know if they are just a higher intensity or will they draw more current from the car's power itself?

they are just higher intensity. they draw the same current. if you do change headlight bulbs yourself, be careful never to touch the glass bit as that will cause them to fail prematurely. if you accidentally touch the glass envelope, clean it with methylated spirit....

Top tip, many thanks to you for that. In which case I shall be getting myself a pair of these bulbs for the arrival of the new car :)I'll just need to find out if it's H4 or H7. I found a website for the bulbs: is this information correct for the new generation Yaris SR light fittings? It's coming up as H4..

Could well be right - the Japanese still seem to favour the H4 bulb.

Assuming that its either H4 or H7 and not something else, then the way to tell is to look at the bulb and/or the wiring connector on the back.

If there's a single bulb in the headlight that works both on dipped beam (normal headlight) and also on full beam then its probably H4. The H4 bulb has a 3-wire connector on the back to operate both main and dipped circuits from the same bulb.

If the headlight has two separate bulbs for dip and main beams then these are probably H7. The H7 bulb also only has a single wire running into it as it has a single element (filament).

Easiest is to take a quick look under the bonnet either at the garage showroom or when you get your car home and see if there's a three-wire connector going into the back of the headlight bulb. If it has, its definately H4, just like both previous Yaris models...

My wife has just bought a new yaris, the TR model. Headlights switch off as normal, bulbs are the same as the older model yaris. Only difference seems to be the high level brake light is LED's and the reversing light bulbs are 16w capless, two of them, presumably to supply more light for the reversing camera. The side repeaters are in the mirrors and the bulb can be replaced, you do not have to buy the whole unit as on the old model, front indicator bulbs can be replaced without having to remove the plastic wheel arch shield. It does not have daylight running lights, I was told they are only a legal requirement in January 2012. As I said this is the TR model, can not speak for the others.

Just looked in the hand book, if all else fails read the instructions! It shows a light switch with the off, side and headlight positions as normal but with a further position labelled auto. the text says 'if equipped' Further explanation simply states the lights come on and go off automatically. No need to adjust the water drip onto the carbide!

Thanks for the replies Geoff. Great help indeed. Just out of curiosity however, you say your wife has bought the new model. DO you mind me asking how long she waited for delivery? It's just that I've not managed to see one on the road just yet and the Toyota dealer I purchased mine from said they have sold a heck of a lot of them, maybe they haven't been handed over just yet if there is a high demand.

Car was ordered on 4th. September 2011 Salesman told us what was available as regards model, colour, specification etc. and delivery dates. My wife chose a 3 door TR with the 1330 engine which we were told would arrive between the 16th. and 26th. September. Phone call on the 19th. September to say it had arrived, collected it on 21st September. The salesman offered quite a lot of alternatives, if anyone wanted special specifications then I presume the delivery would be much longer. Another factor which may cause delays is that the touch and go system is free for a limited time, how long I do not know. If you would like any other information please ask.

Sorry you are asking the wrong person, my knowledge of computers and mobile phones is extremely limited to say the least. I think you have to have a special type of phone I do not think I will ever get round to this!

Hi, I have been reading up on this as I'll be going through it when my Yaris arrives. I think it's only certain phones that are compatible. I know the iPhone 4 is compatible with most of the features on the Touch And Go system as I've had to ask Toyota myself but not the SMS feature.

As for the internet connection, I think you need a phone that has internet tethering availabe if I'm not wrong. I.E. you need to share the connection from your phone. On iPhones it's in the network settings. That's just as guess as like I say I haven't even got mine yet :P

Hope this helps.

Thanks again Geoff. Spoken to the salesman and it's looking for a mid-late December delivery although he did say sometimes it can come earlier. Let the excitement set in! :)

It's funny though, I don't seem to see ANY new Yarises (plural correction?) at all at the moment.

I had to get tethering turned on to enable internet connection on my iPhone 4 (O2)

I queried the follow me home function on mine as i could not find out how to get them to work. We used to have a C4 with this function and once the engine went off if it was dark, the headlights would stay on for apprx. 30s.

On the Yaris, you have to do this manually (I assumed it was automatically, same as the door locking but no, thats also manual  ), stop the engine and pull the light stalk forward (as if you were flashing your lights), release and then they stay on for 30 secs.

I have just ploughed through the handbook and you are absolutly correct! it is on page 219 of the handbook. Thankyou very much for the information.

Sorry to change the subject but is there any chance that any Toyota dealer (Namely Hills in Woodford) will be open tomorrow as I've been told I'll get my new SR before Christmas which now leaves only tomorrow?

Thanks

Hi Eren,

I suppose all you can do is ring Hills tomorrow but I know Donnelly & Taggart Toyota is closed tomorrow, so they're probably all the same.

Hi Lorna, thanks for the reply. I guess that's all I can do tomorrow. I hope so, I was really looking forward to getting that car especially when I've already had 3 different delivery dates :(
