I don't mind confiscating cars off people when they have acted like 5 year olds - but i do have a problem with perfectly good cars being crushed. Its a joke - it costs money to crush a car yet if they sold that Lexus they would actually get money for the taxpayer  .

Makes the scrappage schemes of 2009/2010 seem like the height of amazing logic, its the same with the police in the Uk - they take the car of you for no tax which is great - but if you don't claim the car back - they crush it. Even the crappiest car ever is worth something in the condition it was siezed in (youve got to bear in mind we are talking about cars that are being driven).

Lol at the comments about the bank though - you could just imagine the conversation - weve come to take back our Lexus - errr slight problem its crushed lol. Let me make it quite clear though - my comments about the car being crushed is not intended to be anyway sympathetic to the drivers plight. Quite frankly i couldn't give a toss about him losing his car if hes street racing - no its the idea of a valuable car being crushed due to lack of thought and simply because its "procedure"

Couldn't agree more, cash for clunkers is the latest american craze and those cars could have all gone to someone who needed it too.

AND it would be nice had that Lexus been sold on and some money returned to the people... but hey.. would it have filled the pot holes in the roads? Don't be silly...

I never liked the IS-F anyway!

The current shape IS is horrid, the fake exhaust tips are unforgiveable...

The TTE IS430 was spot on :D

Given California's claimed green status I wonder how they can explain this, yes punish the driver, but why not resell the car or at least break it and use the money for better road awareness lesson...

Of course the problem here is that the authorities tend to put cars in a different category altogether in terms of the environment, recycling is considered cool for most things. But cars are the exception - because for whatever bizzare reason the authorities want you to buy a new car as "its cleaner for the environment" sadly overlooking the environmental impact of a new car being build.

The LEZ in london for example makes no sense at all - particularly when you get silly things like old diesel Escort vans and Land Rover Defender commercial variants being banned. Meanwhile - if you have a diesel Escort car or a car version of the Defender 90 - you can drive away happy out. Oh and by the way the bit i have issue with is the commercial Escort or Defender being banned - such a stupid stupid idea. I also disagree with the idea of Euro 3 trucks being banned (i also disagree with with all the pre euro regs and Euro 1 and 2 trucks being banned but banning Euro 3 is just stupid) because we are now effectively saying that a 100 grand truck is effectively no good after only 5 or 6 years work. This means that if you buy a brand new 2011 truck for 75 000 pounds to use on London work you will now have to factor in the fact that realistically you will only get 5 years work out of it and will have to pay for a brand new truck again - which will have to be factored into the rates for the job. 20 years ago one could buy something like a Scania and potentially factor in a lifespan of 10 years and 1.5 million kms.

Now its a lifespan of 5 years and 500 000 kms Sadly common sense is not on the agenda of law makers - its obvious they will not be the ones paying 75 grand every 5 years for a new truck just to do haulage work in London legally.

Couldnt agree less. There are far too many vehicles on the road as it is. This should be one way of reducing the numbers, along with unisured vehicles, motorists that have been caught X amount of times driving whilst impaired / disqualified / unlicensed etc etc. Who cares if it is a perfectly good vehicle, its only metal, which could then be recycled into something else.

Perhaps it might be best to look at better transport options in order to reduce car numbers - because to be honest scrapping a perfectly good

car is not the way to reduce numbers. Better to work on introducing superior quality public transport offering superior value for money, are train prices still at silly money in the UK.

Well the original issue wasn't that the cars were being siezed - but rather that they were being scrapped instead of being sold on, my thinking is that the cars would still be siezed. But with regard to the public transport - funnily enough but i think that yes possibly people who drive while uninsured and/or disqualified (and other similar type offences migh be a lot less inclined to do it if the legal option of traveling by public transport was more convienient.

I mean youd want to be more than a bit simple to go driving your untaxed, uninsured car without a licence around the place with all the ANPR gadgets in police cars if you could enjoy cheap efficient public transport.

Red Diesel, again I agree with you!

And Ross, you seem to take such an incredibly hard line on illegal driving, and from your posts I gather that you view "street racers" as nothing but scum and utter bone heads.

However there is a distinction between a fast driver, a street racer and of course a complete penarse.

My problem with this way of dealing with street racing is that it was thought up and executed by people who obviously do not have the ability to make such a distinction between these types of driver. They too see anyone who drives quickly in a car with lowered suspension as an anti-christ with a love of eating children and a penchant for setting cats on fire.

I will happily state that anyone stupid enough to street race should be subject to involuntary euthanasia by receiving a tomohawk to the face. The same goes for penarses. However quick drivers tend to be some of the very best, and these are the ones who will have their cars crushed. Not only that but the cars could have gone to people who needed them, and as RD has stated, if the number of cars on the road is going to stop you from buying a new one rather than letting one get crushed that could have helped, then why not try and improve public transport. I use the trains every week and I can honestly say that I have had more pleasant experiences with my testes in a lathe. I would consider using it full time if it would improve and come down in price.

Back to the point in question - it catches mostly the wrong people, and here's the killer - Can you say with complete honesty that you don't drive illegally?

And before you answer that, please allow me to part with you a fact once told to me by a very wise man: "In this world there are two types of men. There are W*nkers and there are Liars."

I believe the same applies here...

Regarding the public transport scenario - if one has to commute daily or do any sort of a long trip but doesn't want or wish to buy a new car

due to finances. Its all too easy (and potentially too nice) to purchase something like an old immaculate Mondeo or Mk 1 Octavia and use that in preference. Volvo S60 or Saab 9 5 might do the job too - but those Swedish chaps would be a bit too found of the petrol lol, my point of course - its easier to have a cheap older car and run that relatively fuss free if bought right and maintained right - than mess about with trains.

Also law enforcement struggles sometimes to tell the difference between someone driving a nicely modified older car like a Mk 2 Cavalier with C20 XE and a chav in a little Corsa with stupidly loud exhaust.

The Cavalier might be the most amazing piece of engineering on the road (post modification) but all a police officer sees is that its modified and thus a menace to society (it isn't but officialdom isn't always blessed with logic). Meanwhile while Mr and Ms plod is wasting time with a Cavalier thats done nothing wrong - some little all round general ***** thats broken into someones house for the keys of the car and stolen said car drives by without a care in the world :ffs: (ANPR will only pick it up once the cars been reported stolen and anyway Plod is busy in the Cavalier looking it over and thus by the time he or she gets back in the cop car the stolen car is long gone ) .
