2002 Yaris Automatic - Full / Mmt Or What?

Hello All

I am looking to get an automatic car for my wife, being a Toyota driver my first stop was a secondhand Yaris, but having done a forum and internet search I am reading all sorts of horror stories about the MMT box.

I have spotted a reasonably priced 2002 CDX which has what appears to be a 'proper' auto box, but I am trying to figure out if this is the case or if it is one of the MMT type? Is there a simple visual difference (there seemed to be)?

Any info and comments gratefully received!

Not knowing when the MMT was first used I can only suggest there could well be a difference in the gear selector lever. If it's viewable. A proper auto will probably have R,N,P,D,D1,D2 or similar. The MMT :censor: could have R,N,E,M with a + and - in the M position for manual change.

A 2002 could either be Freetronic - a forerunner of MMT - and WORSE. Run away..

or

It could have a proper torque convertor with 4 speeds plus an overdrive.. Which is pretty reliable and quite acceptable..

One look under the bonnet .. If there is a conventional gearbox and lots of electronics.. Freetronic.

A torque convertor is a round cylinder about 3-5 inches wide after the engine..

looks like a torque convertor one.. (I think!)
