Headlamp Bulb

Hi all

I've got a replacement headlight bulb on order through my local Mr T. He wants £65 for the pleasure. I cant seem to find them on the interweb, having drawn a blank with EuroCarParts and Halfords. I've got an iQ3 and the bulb isn't the standard one listed for iQ. The one on mine has a 90 degree bend in the middle, not the straight standard 472 variety. Have any of you good people found an alternative source for this apparently rare bulb??

Thanks in advance

From what I've read on here the bulbs are HIB2's which it appears we are the only cars to use them! Pretty dumb on the part of Mr T. IMHO!

Yes, they ask a lot for it...

First they sell it for a big price and then for a lot more they put it in your car.

I asked them to do it... my hands do not fit next to the back of the lamp-unit.

Here the bill from the Dealer (in Euro's).. a total of € 63,36 ... mind you...

Gotta make you think it might be cheaper to install a set of Xenons.

David, I thought you already had them fitted. There's been a few threads on this, and looks like the kit to go for are the 35W 5000-6000k temp.

As long as they will meet the MOT requirement from January 2012

Self levelers, washers, etc.

Hi George

Does it not say 'May" "Vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge 3. (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps may be fitted with headlamp washers and a suspension or

headlamp self levelling system. Where such systems are fitted they must work"

Or did I get it wrong

You got it right by the way they have done that,

but i think there is every chance that will need changed, it is not how it was supposed to be getting changed as the new checks came in..

The current C&U regs require HID equipped cars 'to have auto levelling and washers', however the new MOT regs from January just state t'that if fitted they must work'.

Odd thing there.

So do you think all new cars at some point be HID and require washers. Its strange, I personally think that as soon as a safety feature has been invented Like ABS, then it should be on all new cars immediately and not an option. It used to be an optional selling point at a a cost premium along with airbags, traction control. I know my iQ has all of them, but I don't know if they are fitted as standard. There should be a basic rolling stock with all known safety items fitted then add all the luxury.I always felt if I couldn't afford £3k, extra the mercedes owners were more valued than me. Safety should not be at a premium ever.

Kalbaga,

I replaced both bulbs in mine for HB4 fitments. Readily available, comes in a number of effects 'HID', clear white etc. Think I paid £17 for the pair. Only problem is the fitting configuration on the back doesn't fit into the designated slots. All you will have to do is file down part of one of the pins, and it will fit, to quote Mr Ventura himself 'like a glove'!!

Hope this helps. Any problems give me a shout.

Thanks for this. I did look at some of those but seeing the tabs on the back weren't quite the same, I decided not to proceed. I'll grab a file and save myself a bunch of money. Thanks for your advice

David,

This is me your talking too!! I bought them cos they looked pretty, do you not know me at all haha.

To be honest, the wattage wouldn't be sure of, performance wise they have definitiely increased the distance with regards vision, round the country lanes is does come in handy.

Can you get better bulbs for the IQ? The ones in at are terrible on country lanes :censor:

It didn't bother me until quite recently when I was down some unfamiliar lanes in the rein. There has been a lot on here about the bulbs. It seems MR T decided to use a "special" for us and others can be used with a little filing of the locating tab. Standard bulbs available in the shops are 55watt rating and are DOT spec. The others are available via eBay rated at 100watt. My concern with these is the circuitry that operates them. consumption of each 55watt bulb is 4.58 amps, if you increase the wattage to 100watts you are then looking at 9.16 amps. A big difference. In the past the power to the headlights would have been via a 30Amp relay so no real problem as the cabling was over rated anyway.but with electronic switching its difficult to access. The safest option in my opinion, would to use either a better 55w bulb or change the whole thing to HID

I'd be more worried about overloading/over heating the power cables that supply the bulbs. Instant fire isn't a good thing.

Is is not important how much power you need (watch it only for the wirings-heating) to light the bulb - you need higher lumen/candelpower. And the HIDs are not better, than the original HIR2. :boxed:

Well that answers that then. I thought we had the 9012's which were reported to be the brightest i thoight. Btw the cable will take the 9 amp rating Its the electronic switch which is the unknown. Dont know whete we go from here then for mpre lumens
