Hello everyone

Got my christmas present a little early a gorgeous Rav 4 diesel and love it :yes: :yes: :yes: :yes: :yes:

we bought it from an elderly gentleman who unfortunately due to health reasons can no longer drive

ive always had VW's my first Toyota. A very good friend had one and last year during the winter my Golf got stuck in the snow and i was going to and from work with him and just fell in love with the Rav (not my friend)and wanted one ever since

Anyway on my first drive of the car it was beautiful and awesome to drive and have really enjoyed doing my shopping in it and the kids love it (cant wait for the snow now)

the only thing i cant get my finger on is when the engine is cold its flawless but as it gets warmer and you start shifting gears from 3rd-4th to 5th at around 30-40mph it feels like its going to stall but when i change down its ok but only when engine is warmed up not cold. im a very light footed driver and with golf it was an auto so had no gears to change.is it possible theres something wrong or am i not driving right.

Welcome to the club.

When you say it feels like its going to stall, does it ever?

You have no warning lights on the dash? A failing 02 sensor can cause this.

Hi Ya

no it hasnt stalled. ive kept my foot on the accelerator and it does start getting fast takes a while then you can feel the turbo come in and its fine

no lights have come on

ill be honest i dont really have a great deal of experience with cars and have left it to the garages

i have been ripped off a few times previously and thought ill search on the net before i get it to a garage

Compared to other cars I've had the Rav is quite high-geared. Effectively this means I generally stay in gear a little longer, roughly speaking I go into 3rd at 30, 4th at 40, 5th at 50 etc. Also I sometimes find lower gears more economic than you'd expect. At 40 for example you can use 5th, but higher revs in 4th can sometimes be more economic (according to the dash readout). This does feel like your revving it a bit more than "normal" but would also eliminate the feeling it's going to stall perhaps?

D4D Rav 2002!! might be early signs of SC valves, but then what do i know :unsure: have a read of Rupert rav4s post SCV replacement on this page about 15 down...Merry Christms

Read The SCV topic. Is there any way of finding out if it is Tbe SCV problem.

It does chug along I do feel it's doing something it's does feel like a stall/***** and once it's going it's fine and it's mainly in 4th and 5th once engine is hot

Have you done that fuel filter yet? You could try seeing if there are any trouble codes stored.

If I change up without sufficiant rev's for the next gear mine does the same, I drive light footed too to save fuel but you need to let the rev's get above 2000 before you change up.

You can get the code by shorting wires in the OBD plug but is you are not confident you will need to nip into a garage.

This is all way above me OBD etc. I know someone at work whose got something I'm assuming it's the same will try him to read the codes but there are defo no lights on on the dash

Hi Mate. Welcome to the club....

Look here for a fault code reader...

You plug this into the OBD Port which is near the steering column on the Rav.. It will read and display any current and stored fault codes ..

Easy to use and will work on any car after around 96 so will always be handy.. Will pay for itself the first time You use it... HTH.

I'm pretty sure it won't work with a 2002 diesel. Petrols yes but you are looking at 2004ish with diesels. You need some expensive Snap On kit or dealer for that one. The cheapest way is to get the flash codes but I'm not encouraging somebody to short pins out if they are not very confident. Get your mate to look Blue.

Anchs as always is right, no obd port on the 2002, however these were pretty much the early symptoms on my old (now my brothers) 2002 rav and eventually replacing scv,s from Kingo cured the problem.. not to say that yours is the same and i am no techy type, so seek the guidance of anyone but me before going ahead :unsure: Stew

Here you go. Read from DI 6 and keep in mind that the special service tool (SST) is just a piece of wire.

Have to agree with the above, I find the Rav is quite high-geared also (talking diesel here)........at what RPM are you changing gears? I find that anything under 1500 RPM and the engine labours like hell, and does sound like its going to stall......but will pull through it with a bit more gas pedal........but I really dont like to do this as the engine sounds like its really hurting....... I have heard that these engines like to lug low down, but i`m not too sure with the labouring noises and vibrations it makes under 1.5k rpm.

I'm changing gears between 1500-2000 RPM. I think you've described it better than I have. You do get the vibrations and it's reminded me of my wife's Yaris that used to do same as she was changing gear way too early but the car but it carried on till it picked up a bit more revs.ill keep an eye on my revs and will update
