Vsc - Abs - Brake Check Warning Light

This afternoon the warnings appeared, but the car runs nicely, the breaks work and they're good and the break lights work as well.

I started the car later, but the warnings didn't appear again.

What could be the problem? Is there a problem?

You need a fault code reader for about £13 off eBay.

Give us the code and we'll see what it could be. Usually the EGR or the brake light switch.

Don't lose any sleep. A mate's warning light flashed up 2 or 3 times in a week and never did it again. That was about 6 months ago.

Wow these have come down a lot in price in the last few years. Usually I go the laptop route but one of these could be very handy for when you are away from your laptop. Do you recommend this particular model? Do they list the only code or the code and the text description of the code?

If there is no "check engine" message with the rest of them, I believe it is usually the brake switch, not the EGR.

If the switch is playing up, the fault can very often manifest itself under very light braking.

The is always the connecting two pins on the OBD connector trick with the 4.3, to read out fault codes on the instrument pack. An OBD reader will not show the braking system DTCs.

Good flaming grief....!!!!! I paid £23.00 last year for this blessed thing. Worked fine Bob, as I just reported at weekend when I forgot to re-wire up the EGR I had just cleaned (EEJIT.) Cancelled fault in seconds.

Go get one Jozsef, and remember ONLY SWITCH ON IGNITION AFTER CONNECTING READER, AND MAKE SURE IGNITION OFF WHEN DISCONNECTING. That's what I was told....not quite sure why, but I always do as I am told......

Still relevant Kev, if it is an EGR problem, because you'll probably get powertrain DTCs, which can be read. :thumbsup:

....and no powertrain DTCs might help indicate it is just the braking system. :thumbsup:

The stop lamp switch is not the same as the brake pedal load sensing switch. Two different switches.

In other words, never have ignition on when connecting or disconnecting.

Alright Kevin, thanks for everything. I don't forget that I never connect or disconnect the reader under ignition. I ordered it this afternoon, I think it's going to be here on friday or next week.... oohhh... no, it's coming from Hong Kong. 2-3 weeks before it arrives. If I saw that earlier, then I would've bought it from somewhere else. I cleaned the EGR valve today. It wasn't too dirty, but at least it's cleaner now.

Hi. Been having the same problem for approx. six months now on my 2006 RAV4-XT4 2.2 D-4D. I've cleaned the EGR valve twice but not much difference. I have been trying to "study" the fault whilst driving and it DOES appear to happen more often when braking lightly. No stored DTC's either. Ignition off and then on again clears the lights and faults. Can anyone tell me the part number of the brake light switch? Or even better. Where I could get one for this Saturday? Living in Northern Ireland so looking for express delivery!!!

I'm not sure I understand what fault you're talking about but the part number of the brake switch is 84340-69025 - ideally I'd need the VIN to double check this. If you Google the part number, you'll find the switch on Amazon etc.

The fault happens when you apply the brakes. You get three faults displayed on the speedo display "check VSC system" "check brake system" and "check ABS system". There are no stored DTC codes and it resets when you turn the ignition off then on again so I'm assuming it's the brake light switch on the brake pedal? Vehicle details are:-

2006 Toyota RAV4-XT4 2.2 D-4D

VIN JTMBA31V406010318
A/TM03A/EA64F
C/TR1E0/FA13
Model ALA30R-AWFGYW

It does seem to happen when applying the brake pedal lightly. Just tried it at standstill to get the codes up again!?

First of all - the part number I gave you is correct for your VIN. I'm guessing theres no obvious problems with the brake switch ie the brake lights go on and off as you press and release the pedal (with the engine running). The switch is adjustable to some extent - try moving it upwards with a couple of washers so that the switch operates earlier but don't overdo it - to prevent spurious brake light there needs to be a reasonable amount of pedal movement before the switch operates.

So do you think these faults could be down to the brake light switch? I'll try adjusting it up a little and let you know the outcome.

Checked the switch and it was sitting hard on the actuator. Removed the switch and opened it! One side of the normally closed contact was slightly blackened but not pitted so cleaned and added some contact fluid. Re-assembled and adjusted back a little to leave the switch actuator stem protruding from the switch app 2mm (as described in the manual) I have clocked up over 200 miles since and not a dicky bird. Fingers crossed this was the source of the fault. Although I would expect next time it starts it is time for a new switch.

Well my 2003 rav d4-d is starting to play this game also... Argh.....

So....

I took the front abs sensors off(undid the retaining bolt then pulled it straight out... and cleaned them up alittle. Magnetic bits of rust were on it......

Then back on...

Can't get the rear sensors out the same way... Am I being stupid?

Tomorrow/today... I will be stripping the hub unless someone can shEd some light on the situation... Am I being silly or should I just unbolt the retainer and pull the rear speed sensor out?

Help appreciated...

We'll what a day I have had... Decided to attack and see...... Result being need to visit parts dept tomorrow new sensor and ring..... May take some pics assist with others attacking same job....

Hi. It's been four months now, trip to Scotland and a week touring and to date I have not had one single occurrence since adjusting the brake light switch. Big thanks to gjnorthall for your help and guidance.

I am too getting this error msg, started again two weeks after getting it back off Toyota, I was free braking slowing to a traffic light. Though it comes on randomly after so many miles, Toyota had it back to do the turbo and it started doing this just before it went in. They couldn't find any codes on it and reset it then did it again afterwards when I took it away briefly. No codes were found, they said I and the AA using there new Bosch kits had messed with the computer codes, I too had one of these but was testing it after the lights come on, so the best way is to connect it up then drive and let the error lights occur?
