Transfer And Diff Oil Change

I had my RAV serviced at an independant garage, one i always use and are reasonable on prices and seem to do a good job. As the milage was just above 60,000 they recommended the Transfer and diff oil to be changed as per the service recommendation. The price was £74 (i can't remember if that included vat, but i think it would be on top).

Anyway i said I'll have it done at a later date. In the meantime i spoke with my Local Toyota service department who said they check the oils first and determine if it needs replacing.

What are peoples thoughts on replacing these oils? The price seems reasonable to me for it to just to be done regardless of checking.

Thanks

Lee

The requirements for changing these oils are quite clear. They should be done every second service and that is multiples of 2 years or 20k whichever come first.

How do they "check"?

My understanding (which may not be correct) is that these oils, while perhaps not experiencing the temperatures of an engine oil, come under extreme pressure. I would have thought that would result in the long chain molecules (which makes the stuff slippy), breaking up over time.

The oil may look clean, but surely you can't tell by looking what state it is in?

Mine was done recently @ 20k. The transfer box oil looked OK. The rear diff oil wasn't so clean.

Stick to the change intervals as the main man says above.

They probably just check the levels, if not ok they top up. Or they just use the force to determine oil quality and levels if they a lazy :D

I change mine at 20k intervals, but this includes gearbox too.....:D

The easiest to get hold of is GL5 80W/90 hypoid.

If you add half a litre to each you will be OK.
