Rotational Noise Between 30 And 50 Mph

We have bought a 2007 plate Rav4 from a private seller, sold as seen.

Unfortunately, we didn't spot an annoying noise that only occurrs between 30 and 50 mph which is a rotational noise that varies in pitch.

Its particularily bad when you put the car in fifth and it happens when you just lightly touch the accelerator.

Below 30mph its not there and above 50 it is not noticeable.

Take your foot off the gas and the noise goes.

We have taken it to a few garages but all are totally confused as to what is causing it.

Has anyone come accross a similar noise please.

Many thanks

Phil

Could be wear on the 5th gear. Has the 5th gear ever been replaced? Is the noise a whine, or something else?

Worth checking, too, that the gearbox/transaxle is full (SAE 75W-80, not 75W-90).

I hope so. But check the oil anyway?

Hi

Thank you for your replies.

The car does make the noise in 4th as well so I had discounted the 5th gear.

All oil levels are fine in the grear box and diff.

I will try and record it and post it on the site.

Thanks again.

Hi Phil.

We have a very similar noise on our 04 Rav,coming from the back end, which we took back to the dealers to have checked out.

They said they couldn't here it after doing some road tests and listening to bearings etc while on a rolling track, again nothing could be found.

It has been suggested by forum members to change the front and back wheels round which to date i haven't tried, mainly because Mrs P who drives the Rav says she doesn't notice it so much now,but i do when i'm in it.

Have listened several times. Sounds like a rotational and heavy mass, like a substantial bearing. Doesn't sound like an engine noise (not high pitched enough) or gearbox (not a whine). I would check out prop shaft bearing, and rear diff. Wheel bearing going? Or a drive shaft bearing where they enter g/box and/or rear diff?

You say you've checked the diff for oil, but does that include rear diff and transfer box, which is separate from g/box?

Or, could be part of engine/transmission/exhaust coming into contact with a section of bodywork, causing normal noise to be amplified. Just a thought.

Many thanks for all of you comments. Very much appreciated.

I'm going into Toyota again on Monday and we will have another go to find out what's causing the noise.

I'll mention all of Chris's points to them.

As Paul mentioned, my wife is also getting used to it now, it just bugs the hell out of me.

I'll keep you posted.

Cheers again

Phil
