Ignition Key Case Cracked

I am resident in Spain. I have a 2005 RAV4 1.8 petrol.. When I purchased it second hand both keys had cracked and glued cases. These have lock and unlock buttons only not the 3 button version for sounding alarm.

One of the cases has broken at the end where the key is fixed. I have glued it back together again. Both keys have a small crosshead screw holding the two halves together but neither screw will budge.

Question 1. How much are these keys to replace using a Toyota dealer?

Question 2. Do I really need a key with the Battery etc to open the doors remotely when they open by inserting the key in the lock anyway?

TIA

Hello, fellow ex-pat!

Mine broke too. Answer to Q1 is a staggering €140 from Mr.T ! And Q2: No, I suppose not.

Someone will post the detail, but I seem to remember a post about replacement KEY CASES (you transfer the radio slug and the metal key components) on eBay or somewhere . . .

Hi Biker D,

Please see today's separate post "Replacement RAV4 ignition key case".

I've ordered a couple for myself: they're easily damaged if your knee (or someone else's, possibly*) collides with the key while in the IGN SW, or if you sit on the key when it's in a back pocket.

Chris

* Jokes will follow, no doubt, about torn headlining and heels...

Hi from a fellow Spanish resident!

I had the same problem with the keys. I bought a blank off e bay, this takes the remote locking gubbins from your key, then had the keys cut, and all is well. The cost, as I remember was around £ 6.00 total. However, I did this on a UK visit, but I am sure the local Spanish locksmith could also cut the key.
