Hiccuping 4.2 D4D On Acceleration.

My 2003 D4D is hiccuping on acceleration ( I cant think of a better way to explain it) It doesnt happen every gear change as such, but enough to bother me, it also seems as if the engine isnt giving me all its got, a bit underpowered.

Now before I take it back to the garage where I got it from 3 weeks ago!! (yep) any ideas please? I was told it had been serviced before I picked it up but my first thought was fuel filter? anyway I am sure you folks on here are far more clued up than I am. thank you.

It's already been back once when the management light came on and it went into limp mode, they plugged it into some snap on diagnostic thing that first of all didnt recongnise the vehicle and then came up with fault code whcih the bloke didnt know what it was so he reseet it and that was it, to be fair it hasnt done it again but I am concerned if I go back again without giving them a clue thenn they will do the same again.

Get them to plug their code reader in again, Gary, and be politely insistent on knowing what codes are showing / stored. Fuel filter full of water and muck should deffo not be discounted.

the guy said the code was UDR but had no idea what it was! I cant find that code on any technical data on the Rav so perhaps he was telling me porkies which doesnt fill me full of confidence Kev

Hi Gary ,welcome to the club

Mine has been doing the same for the past few months,but only seems to be on cold starts either in morning going to work or leaving work

Either way the engine is cold,or about halfway through the warm up process.

Normally in second / third gear,i call it hesitation at about 3000 revs,but hiccuping..is another good description.

I'm convinced its turbo activation related,.....but once engine is at normal temp,all is ok.

So it seems to also be engine temperature related,i've had fuel filter changed,air filter changed,VSV cleaned,EGR cleaned.

I've added fuel additive ( BG244 ) about 6 weeks ago now,...and its not a bad as it was, but its still there.

So far mine has'nt put the engine light on.....yet.

As you say.....its getting just a little annoying,want to find out what's causing it.

Hi Jamie. mine does it when its warm as well as cold, but it does it every time I drive it so needs sorting out sooner rather than later because its annoying.

Had the same on mine, at about 3000rpm and heavy throttle. Been doing it for some months, but only a couple of times each week, and only under hard acceleration. Fuel filter already renewed. Never hesitated when cold, even on a long uphill climb, presumably due to increased (cold running) fuelling.

At a routine service, I renewed the air filter, a bit ahead of requirement. Previously, at each 10000km service, it was blown out with an airline, and given a gentle wash. With new filter, problem has vanished entirely.

Also noticed that the current Toyota-Denso filter (17801-64070) has a new part number, and is only two-thirds the height/depth of the previous item. Design rethink or rationalization?

Could it be your MAF Rambler? It sits on the air box somewhere,....Was it you that shown us the really dirty air filter a while back?

Maybe some of this dirt has contaminated the maf?

You could try spraying some cleaning solution inside the maf, and see if it helps, do a Google for maf cleaning......

But don't put anything in the hole like a cotton bud as its very delicate, its usually a wire or a ceramic bit in there.

Worth a try?

Did you get those new boots in the end?

I use that CRC spray! Its very good stuff. eBay for a tennor! But electrical contact cleaner will also do the trick :fireman:

Blimey.....thanks for all that info,well i need to get some cleaner first,then locate the MAF & try myself.....being very careful indeed.

Yes it was me who had the filthy air filter,so maybe this MAF is the issue.....

If it is.......could it be that simple.

Yes i did get some new boots in the end my friend,thought i would give fabric boots a go for a while,wore them today on a 13 mile walk.....coped well.

I may need to google Rav4 MAF sensor to see exactly where it is.

Hi Mate,

Fuel filter should have been done at service when I picked it up but judging by the state of the air filter I just took off it is doubtful so I have a new one to go on tomorrow. I must say the air filter I just put on has a top and bottom layer but the one I took off was just a bottom layer, is that a problem? It fitted in the air box ok, was a mann filter not a Toyota????

Milage is 70k Full Toyota history.

I did the MAF sensor thing and obviously changed the filter but still doing it, I have no idea what the SCV coils resistance means but I will ask at the garage tomorrow, any help as said before very much appreciated as its now starting to p me off big time!

when stated you must be sure this job has been exactly been done. you have a head ache and we have to help you to cure it first before consuming an Anadin . have a loot at all filters to exclude them from an issue chains. as to an air filter -- it must to have the same air flow thru capacity and prevent an air suction obstacle.

as to SCV -- the pinned section has already been managed for all the ravers to use a simple steps -- just read it thru carefully.

you have two SCV as on the picture there and each one has got a solenoid coil governing workability of the valve itself -- how does it work ? ok when SCV is firmly mounted -- the valve stem closes the diesel suction hole in the pump body becasue the loading spring pushes the stem (it is called normally closed valve). in order to suck the diesel each SVC solenoid must be under 12V voltage -- it means when fed with 12V the coil is normally heated because it must to overcome spring force. it is understood this leads to heat origination inside the solenoid coil. and finally this heat fractures a varnish on the coil wire leading to coil resistance dropping and finally wire burning out. this is the main reason of SCV issue on diesel engines. and you can imagine what is SCV temp in sunner (!). sometimes SCV are about to die and play with you giving no sufficient diesel portion per cycle/.

Hi all

Well....i got the CRC cleaner ,took the MAF out ( really easy ),and gave it a blast with the cleaner.

Strange how it seems to come out of the straw in a liquid form,rather than pressurised spray !.

Anyway...i gave it a good ol spray for several seconds in all the holes,but kept end of straw well away from those fragile little wires tucked away inside.

I actually ended up useing the entire bottle ??!...as it was liquid...almost soaked the sensor.

I then let it sit in the sun ouside and air dry naturally for at least half an hour( did'nt want to take any chances of it being even slightly damp from the spray)

Then re assembled as per removal ( again ,nice & easy).then took car for spin.

Rav4 seems more responsive now,BUT i await until morning......for the all important cold start..........here's hoping.

Then see how it goes in next few days.....

Ok update guys..........its not good..................full service done, all filters changed, MAF cleaned , new SCV Valves, and its still doing it, what next before I loose the will to live? It seems to do it more as it gets warmer and is worse if you put your foot fairly hard down to pull out of a junction or something like that...................aarggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

it looks very strange

have you cleaned EGR ? how about turbo --- is it in order ?

put a piece of clear pipe between the filter and the HP pump and make sure there is no air getting through.

hhhhm have noticed today that is def only when I shove my foot hard down that it does it...........stll will do EGR valve this week end and see if that cures it.

ok folks update, it broke down again, went into limp mode and I got it home, then took it back to dealer, he has had it away at a specialist who has fixed it (apparently) it was ' a programming issue ' in the ECU.....................how does that happen then? i am no mechanic but surely the ECU cant just re progamme itself incorrectly? I dont understand ECUs at all but how come that happened? its an 03 plate after all, its not as if its new and was progammed wrongly at the factory?

ah well we wil see I pick it up in the morning.
