Toyota Aygo - Clutch Gone

Totally hacked off! Bought a 2008 Aygo 18 months ago, it had done 20,000 miles, really pleased with purchase as never had such a new car! First few months the baffles went, fortunately still under warrantly so had replaced, they also replaced the water pump as also faulty! The garage actually said the baffles often go on Aygos!! hmmm

Two weeks ago the clutch went. It's done 30,000 miles! couldn't believe it but since found out that they are renowned for going and the new aygos have different clutches. Toyota helpful at first saying the Customer Relations would only look into the case if they knew what was wrong so I had to commit to having the gearbox taken out to find the problem. Having done that they managed to wriggle out of helping out by saying because I hadn't had my last service with them six months ago they would not help in any way. The fact that the clutch and release bearings would not have been checked in a service didn't seem to register at all, they just kept repeating it was because I hadn't had a service they would not help out. Am totally furious with them as thought Toyota are a reputable make, hence the reason I bought the car. They have actually put in a new clutch which all the new models have which is interesting. Why can't they admit there was a fault with these clutches and issue a recall.

Sorry rant over, but so fed up and around £600 lighter!!

i had my aygo from brand new.2006 model mmt sports.

the first year was very good,no problems at all, then the problems started.when you start up the car, just about to go off,the car gallops.and also when you sit in traffic it also gallops.

i took to the toyota dealer.they checked it out, they found nothings wrong with the car.its been in the gargage a few time already.then gave up.done 10000 miles service, then 20000miles service.the dealer called me up,problem with the clutch.good thing its got warranty they replaced it.30000 miles service,i told them check if the clutch is ok.they said all good no problem.

40000 miles same thing no problem at all.now its done 48000miles,they called me up,told me the clutch is need to replace.to replace will cost £1800 not inc the replace of the fly wheel.i cant believe what they told me,

all they told me to get a brand new car!!thats not the point!its doesnt resolved the problem by get rid of the car!.

to all those have a mmt aygo, yaris is best to not buy,or if you own one, sell it,you will end up a very large bill.

I bought a Peugeot 107 a couple of years ago, it was a 2006 and had done only 17000 miles. The clutch went on that and I found a local garage that replaced it quite cheaply (can't remember exact price but it was certainly under £500).

I agree that a recall should be done, seems a common problem across Aygo/107/C1 models. The exhaust also went, which I've discovered since is another common problem :/ Hence why I've now decided to go for an iQ instead. It's the 1.33 so here's hoping it has a different clutch.

So a replacement clutch cost you £600? If so you have been well overcharged in my opinion. I work for an indipendant garage and the cost would have been about half this and that is for a full clutch with a three year warranty.

"with a three year warranty"

Unconditional? I would bet there's lots of small print and get out clauses with that.

e.g. sorry sir/madam that's not covered it's wear and tear, driver misuse etc.. Please refer to the miniscule print at the bottom of the back page of your warranty document!

They put a bigger clutch in them from 2009 as they knew about the problem (the centres drop out of them,we've done loads) and even if you have an older model when you do replace the clutch you automatically get the bigger clutch kit....(I'm waiting for the wife's to go anytime as it's a 55 plate and got about 45000 miles up it,oh and retail price for the whole job including gearbox oil and vat is £295.74)

On the lookout for a new clutch for my Corolla to get fitted at my local independent garage, I noticed the clutches for the Aygo look as though the centre of the friction plate is plastic, that surrounds the splined input shaft. No wonder the centre drops out of them if that is the case, even if it is high temp plastic, it still looks better suited to a model RC car. I sympathise with you mate, they will wriggle out of repairs in any which way they can. I refuse to buy new.

As with any manufacturer, clutches are considered a wear item and only covered under the new car warranty for a limited period.
