T180 'cricket' Noises

Hello all,

I just joined the forum.

Firstly i must say i am glad i bought my Auris. It is an absolute dream to drive and has so much power compared to anything else i have driven!

One thing that is bugging me is a little noise i hear mainly when idling, it sounds a bit like a cricket is the best way to describe it (like late at night you hear crickets talking to one another lol) It sort of fades in and out every second or so

I popped the bonnet and if i'm facing the engine its coming from the left hand side of the engine?

Any idea what this might be ?

The car is driving superb so maybe its just going to be one of 'those' noises that can never be solved :)

Thanks

Couldnt realy explain your cricket sound sounds like you have little security guards, far safer than a snake sound :)

On a serious note it could be abit of loose trim in your car? I have had a squeaky seat before now and only makes a noise when you move

About the whine it could gearbox whine or possibly your mistaking it for a turbo whistle which is normal on a turbo diesel

Hi thanks for the reply. I got someone else to listen as well so i wasn't going mad, he said he could hear it every 1 to 1.5 seconds or so, coming from the engine on the drivers side, when the bonnet is raised it gets louder the closer my ear gets to the engine without it being chopped off :)

The whirring i noticed happens in neutral as well as in-gear, and today i found that once the engine has 'warmed' up, it seems to go?

its fairly loud and if i try i can make it sound a bit like a police siren :'(

Check all the pipes are on securley take a visible check over and check your usual oil and coolant levels are toped up, as you can get strange noises if low. Cricket sound could be something is rubbing against each other lol

Turbo should be nice gradual whistle as you rev you should be able to hear it boost, up a police siren is not a good sound signs of a turbo failure, means the turbine is scraping inside the turbo housing loosing balance costly as you will need a new turbo, Get it checked ASAP as it could break causing it to go into the internals worst case scenario. If your in warranty take it back, hard to diagnose without hearing it..

Hi TR01 thanks for the reply. I will do all of those checks thanks.

I think the turbo might be ok as the noise is only when cold, after warmup it goes. I can hear the regular boost/whistle that you mentioned.

Nevertheless i will get it checked as i have a 'warranty' with my used purchase, no doubt the 'warranty' will be a load of rubbish but i'll still try.

Hi spoon flames

I have the same cricket noise too lol. Not sure what it is. It's been doing it for a few months now but seems worse in more damp weather. The whirring noise is the turbo mine has done this from new. It's more apparent on the t180 s and like you say it sounds like a police car sometimes. Again this is normal once the oil warms up and gets round the bearings it stops. Sorry I can't be much help with the cricket noise. My car is been part exchanged on Thursday

Thanks

Carl

Hi Carl,

Thanks for your post. That is reassuring that i am not the only one hearing these noises

You are right the sound gets quieter as time goes on, i can still hear it after 10 mins or so, but it is significantly quieter

As for my lovely crickets, i haven't a clue what it is, it does change speed when revving and is definately coming from one side of the engine bay, near to the washer jet fluid container

I hope you are not part-exing because of the crickets :cowboy:

Lol no I've part exchanged for an avensis tourer due to expanding family. Gone for the T4 spec with the 2.2 150 bhp. Love it

Good luck with the crickets lol

Took it back to the garage i got it from today (is actually a Citroen dealer who took it in part-ex). They checked it out and said it is the tensioner that is causing the problem and agreed to replace it (free) . Awaiting parts which will be a few days then they will fit it whilst i wait. I will report back if this fixes all my mysterious noises :euro:

Hold the airbox induction pipe if it goes (sure it will) just apply a rubber washer to the plasic loacating pin where it is fixed to the body work, If I recall it used to sound like the dash or glove box was rattling when inside the car.

I have the same sort of problem. Except the sounds are more like moo'ing. The sound comes from somewhere near the passenger seat and only seems to happen when I have my wife in the car.

Anyone else with the same problem?

I too have the 'cricket' noise on idle, did the tensioner sort the problem?

I've had the "cricket" noise before, and it turned out to the be the ribbed drive belts. It's known as belt chatter.

It can be due to a worn belt or mis-aligned pulleys.

A loose clamp of the air filter housing caused similar noises this winter in my car. I was very afraid about the cause, until I found out... :)

Thanks for the reply guys, I've checked my air filter housing and all is well - it could be belt chatter as it does seem to be coming from that area. I did have the accessories belt changed under my extended warranty due to a slight intermittent squeal - unsure if any pulleys and or tensioners were changed too. Due to take my car in for it's service soon will mention it to them and see what they say.

well after a new tensioner, two new accessory belts and a new alternator... it still makes the cricket noises. (those items were replaced to cure other issues not this cricket one).

I've finally identified the noise to be coming from my air con compressor pulley. If I turn the AC on the noise disappears. Will visit Toyota and advise of outcome!

Quick update folks

Toyota fitted a new Aircon Compressor and the noise has now gone.

Happy days
