Avensis 2.2D Head Gasket Query

I have recently bought an 2008 Avensis 2.2d with 72k and a full Toyota service history. Have noticed some threads about an extended warranty of 7 yrs/112k miles to cover possible head gasket problems. I do not have any problems (at the moment) but was wondering just how frequently this problem arises, or is it very rare? I am the 3rd owner and was wondering if it is a good idea to keep up the (expensive) Toyota servicing - with the next service being 80k and about £400 or can I go a a vat registered garage and keep all the receipts etc. In light of this possible major catastrophic problem if the head gasket goes, sould I consider selling the car as it approaches the 7 year mark?

Many thanks,

Malcolm

PS. I am getting about 520 miles to a tank and 46mpg and it runs very smoothly.

welcome :)

simple answer - we don't know & Toyota aren't telling.

It's common enough that Toyota have a procedure for it but not enough to be common knowledge or for them to issue a recall.

First, a full service & is £229 under Toyota Fixed Price Servicing & Full+ is £349 (although I don't know at what mileage/when they recommend a Full+).

Second, as long as you can prove that the car has been serviced according to Toyota schedules with appropriate quality consumables but not necessarily by a Toyota dealer you should be fine.

sould I consider selling the car as it approaches the 7 year mark?

up to you but the approved fix is very expensive - probably more than the car is worth by then.

You've got a good few years yet though.

I reckon to average ~45mpg over the year so that sounds about right to me.
