2.0 Vvt-I Gutless?

I was considering buying a 2001 Avensis 2.0 VVT-i with 140k on the clock. The bodywork is spotless and it looked a good buy at £650, but when I took it for a run I was shocked at how lacking in power it seemed. Flooring the throttle in 3rd, the engine seemed to die around 3500-4000 revs and just stopped accelerating. It seemed to rev freely when stationary, although idle was a little erratic.

Compared to my Rover 2.0 TD this car just seemed totally gutless. What could cause this lack of power, or is it par for the course with these engines?

Thanks :)

An eleven year old car with 140K on the clock Hmm!!

Is there ay service history.? The engine could be knackered or have a head gasket problem.

The £650 price tag speaks volumes me thinks.

Plenty of service history and mileage seems genuine judging by overall condition, and yes I thought it was cheap! I wondered if it was a problem with the VVT system, though I know nothing about it really.

My impression of the 2.0 litre vvt-i is that it lacks a bit of tourque below 3000 rpm,

is quite decent above 3000 rpm, and really comes to life above 4000 rpm.

So something must be wrong with your car, and if it feels normal between 2000 and 3000 rpm

maybe its just the fuel filter that's clogged or something similar.
