Avensis D4D 08 Plate Poorish Start

I wondetr if anyone can help, when i start my 08 plate Avensis 2.0 D4D first thing in the morning it starts then immediatly stops, I start it again and more often then not it is ok, however sometimes it would appear that the choke hasn't come in to play and I have to slip the clutch and rev a bit to get up my drive which is on a steep slope, sometimes it appears the choke is on and away I go, I have cleaned the EGR valve which was really sooty/gummed up, but still this little problem, once it has started it stops and starts ok all day with no problem, any ideas?
