2001 Avensis Gearbox/clutch Problem

Hi,

I own a 2001 Toyota Avensis, 5 door, 1.8 VVTi 5 speed manual gearbox which has developed an intermittent problem dis-engaging 1st and 2nd gears when driving (there is no problem selecting gears with engine running but with car stationary).

It could be my imagination but the problem appears to have eased off since the temperature has increased, up to 28 degrees (I now live overseas).

I have read somewhere that Toyota gearbox problems can be attributed to the incorrect type of geabox oil and Silkolen Pro 75W has been recommend, but I find it hard to beleive that the ambient temperature or viscosity of an oil could have such profound effect on the gearbox, but if it can, why only 1st and 2nd gears?

My local garage 'thought' it may be the gearbox selector cables but I think this unlikely as surely this would have an effect on all gears? Failing this he has suggested a recon gearbox which is going to be very expensive.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems or has any suggestions?

Cheers

Ken

If anybody else suffers similar, try buying a 'clutch kit' which in my case cured the problem, cost 400 Euro's including labour.
