bid on the last minute, make sure the seller has good feedback, be aware of sellers selling from places like hong kong or overseas as you could incur import duty. Do your research and see how much it costs to buy the item brand new from a proper online shop, then see if your making a good deal by bidding on eBay. Watch out for obsurdly high hidden postal charges and paypal fees.

thats about it, and if you do win an auction, paying them immdiately via paypal puts you in their good books, and email them after you have paid them to verify they have received payment and ask them when you will recieve the item.

happy bidding!

As a frequent buyer of handbags and shoes off eBay :D Here are my tips!

Always read the description of the item and the payment details, esp if there is a bumper P&P on it.

Also check if they accept your payment method as most accept Paypal but some dont, some are cheques only which need clearance before they will despatch your goods

Always email the seller if you are unsure or to ask questions.

Oh and always check their ratings before you bid!

I tend to wait until near the end of a bid before bidding, that means you are less likely to be out-bid!

Oh and when you receive your item, always rate the seller and they will rate you back, I always like to give credit where credit's due and I've never had a problem buying off eBay before - ever!

Happy Ebaying! :D

Also, read the ad very carefully. Creative punctuation can cause big problems.

When the PS2 came out, eBay was full of them on the day of release, all going for about £500. One ad read something like 'PS2 box and reciept. Mint condition'..etc.

This sold for around £450. The 'lucky' winner recieved exactly what was advertised...the Box and the reciept.......but no PS2.

Contact the seller and ask as many questions as possible. If it's car related, why not ask this forum if anyone has dealt with this seller before.

Dear vmailtk,

You expressed interest in an item titled [iTEM] (*** **** by bidding, however the auction has ended with another member as the high bidder. In compliance with eBay policy, the seller, [name] is making this Second Chance Offer to you at your bid price of £1.20.

The seller has issued this Second Chance Offer because either the winning bidder was unable to complete the transaction or the seller has duplicate items for sale.

If you accept this offer, you will be able to exchange Feedback with the seller and will be eligible for eBay services associated with a transaction, such as fraud protection.

This offer expires Monday, 19 Apr, 2004 12:22:23 BST. To purchase this item, click the "Buy It Now" button located at the bottom of the following page:

is it only open to me, is it real or a con?

If It's for a Porche I'll go halves with you!

Hi

Thanks for your payment via Paypal. This is just an email to confirm that we’ve received your payment.

Because we use an external checkout system, you may receive an email from our Auctionworks server which invites you to pay via Paypal. As you’ve already paid, please disregard the email.

However, we would encourage you to update your details on our server at this address:

http://www.auctionworks.com/pay.asp

By doing so, you’ll make sure that we have your correct details and speed up processing of your order. On the link above, the only step you’ll need to do is enter your address and payment method  (please select ‘Money Order’ to generate your order number).

Either way, we’ll keep you updated and send another email when your item is sent. Please note because the Paypal payments can take up to 24 hours for us to process.

If you’ve got any further questions or need extra help, just let us know and we’ll do all we can.

Thanks

Simon

I guess you don't have to, but as it says, it may speed things up a bit.

To be honest, they should have your details from eBay, so I don't really know what they're on about.

Whatever you do, don't give them any credit card details or owt like that (I'm guessing you're that sensible anyway though).

Ans as for inviting you to bid on other things, as far as I can tell this is fine. After all it's up to you whether or not you buy the items. I personally wouldn't do it, I've sold a few things on eBay recently and I'm just happy that people have bought my stuff.

NO!

dont ever do owt like that no matter how conservative it may seem. it may be a scam

ive had various from scammers that look 150% to be authentic eBay! be very very careful!

and just ignor it when folks are offering you simialr items. its actually agianst the rules on eBay

I didn't think of it that way,but I have to agree with it, after all, it does seem strange them asking for your details twice. I guess any info can be used against you.

Didn't realise "touting" was against the rules. Good job I don't do it then :) . I'm still new to this eBay malarky and I'm still learning the rules.

BTW, any views on escrow? I've heard of scams whereby people receive thier goods, then lie to escrow and get thier cash back and keep the goods. As such I won't touch it as a seller.
