Replacing Coolant

I renewed my long life red coolant myself 5 yrs ago,

Does anyone think it's time to redo it, or does it last longer?

If it needs changing , would it be the case of dropping it from the rad and block and refilling, or

would It be advisable to do a reverse flush?,

If reverse flushing i'll need to take out the thermostat and I don't fancy going to all that trouble.

If the cooland comes out clean, i.e. not muddy or rusty looking I would not bother to flush. Check the two small hoses at the rear of the engine running from the heater hoses to the mixture/idle speed control valve. they can block. When you refill do it slowly, and I mean slowly to avoid an airlock. Check that the two small hoses are hot when the engine heats up, and there is not an airlock in them, otherwise the engine will not run correctly.

If you do decide, I use genuine Toyota pink long life- change it every 10 years or 100 thousand miles according to user manual.

read this.

If you decide to use the Toyota coolant, which is very good. You will need to flush out all the old coolant. No need to reverse flush, just fill up and drain a few times until you can no longer see any colour. The only snag is that there will be someresidual water in the system, and the Toyota coolant is I am pretty sure, but check, ready mixed so it will be diluted by the water in the system. This is the reason I use concentrate.

I've used ready mixed toyota red last time,

I'm going to use the concentrate next time,

My lad also has a Yaris., a 1Litre and I don't know what's in it so I'll do a fill up and drain like you say.

My D4D is due a coolant change this year. I have some ready mix (cheap, Genuine, ebay).. and will drain and refill.

No need to flush in my view: it's still perfectly clean so any contamination from old fuid will be no worse than water left after flushing.

And I will never empty the heater matrix fully.

Well, changed the coolant, was umming and aghrring 'cos it was a bit chilly,

put the heater on max

Dropped the coolant out of the rad and block,

4.7 definatley did not come out, more like 3.7,

I didn't flush,

the old stuff that came out looked pretty clean,

I had done it 5 yrs ago so I knew it was the same stuff, and leaving some in there wont harm,

I put half of 4.7litre of neat antifreeze in and topped up with demin water,

run the engine with the cap on, topped up, let it cool then topped up again,

Going to have a go at my sons 1 litre next, looking at it it's in need of a change as well.

got the antifreeze from Toyota, cheaper than my local motorist center by £7.

That is about right, a litre left in the block and heater matrix. I personally use 5 year life antifreeze and change it every three. Not because it will freeze but for the anti corrosion properties. Renewing antifreeze is a lot cheaper than renewing head gaskets.
