Does He Need A New Engine ?

Hi, I have a friend who has a year 2000 Yaris 1.0 which had been running perfectly this past 3 years or so. It has 170,000miles.

On friday afternoon, he went out to start it but the engine would not turn. He heard a clicking noise & the dashboard lights went out.

Various helpers came with jump leads but this did not make any difference. Everyone(including myself) was assuming it was the starter motor or Battery until today when he tried to start it with a tow from another car.

When he released the clutch in 2nd gear - the front wheels lock-up. Everything seized!

The person towing him said the engine had seized and he needed a complete engine.

Has anyone else had a similar situation ? the engine was running perfectly before no noises, oil & water are fine,

any help much appreciated folks,

thanks in advance

The starter clicking indicates a flat Battery, the starter does not have enough power to engage. However if jump leads made no difference, and the engine locked up, the first thing I would look for is a jammed starter motor, it may well be not disengaging from the flywheel because it is locked. Could be a fault with the starter pinion, or the flywheel, or both. Without the opportunity to examine the car these things are difficult to diagnose.

I'll get on to him & hopefully its just a starter/flywheel issue and not a broken timing chain(as the engine was not noisy beforehand)

Thanks Geoff!
