T Sport Engine Worries

Hi everyone this is my first post and unfortunately its not a good 1.

I just bought a 2005 corolla t sport with 71k on the clock on saturday from newcastle and was happily driving it home to aberdeen when about an hour in decided to open the taps up. However as soon as the car hit about 6400rpm engine management light came on along with the trs and vsc light came on so naturally decided to take it easy from there.

Finally got home and plugged the computer into it and it gave me the fault code P1693. So i cleared the code and decided to take it out again to see if it was just a blip. Same story again though about 6400rpm lights came back on however I could almost swear the oil light also came on for a split second and to top it off theres now a clear knocking noise now coming from the engine and it will no longer go above 6500ish rpm. Iv not drove it since for fear of doing any more damage.

To me this sounds expensive as I know very little about these cars.

Any thoughts, advise would be very greatfully received.

Cheers

Chris

Dear lord Chris...I am so sorry to read of your...welll...nightmare!

Fisrt thoughts for me is...did you buy private or trade/dealer? If private then i suppose theres no harm in contacting the seller for advice but i don't hink you have much to hold them for legally but if your bought from a trader/dealer you can get it all sorted if you're willing to make that journey back!

I know there are loads of T-Sport specialists on here who will come to your rescue with advice atleast...i really hope you sort this one out soon mate...takecare and goodluck!

:flowers:

if it was private i guess it is difficult to get anything sorted.

It was trade however no warranty was given with the car not sure where i would stand there then? Plus dont think the car would make the return leg by the noise the engine is making.

It seems like you get the problem when the car tries to hit lift. So check the lift bolts. Maybe one (or both of them) has snapped. It is a common problem (these bolts wear out eventually after hitting lift too many times - so tsport owners replace them with better quality ones so as never to face this problem).

You need to change them with better quality/material ones. They are very cheap. You could even do it yourself if you feel confident (mechanically-wise).

Check this very helpful guide.

Cheers Mike, i will have a look tomorrow. If it isnt the lift bolts whats the chances of it being the oil pump? As I used to own a DC5 and vtec wouldnt come in until correct oil pressure was reached was wondering if its a possibility also? Im only mentioning this as im sure the oil warning light flashed up.

As long as its not the big ends dont suppose you know if this would effect lift?

I think that if the problem was the oil pump, you would have trouble even at lower revs and not only when trying to hit lift.

Fyi lift is engaged through oil pressure, so if the lift bolts have indeed snapped, then the oil pressure would fall, and maybe this is why you have seen the oil light flashing.

Plus the fact that you hear the knocking sound makes my belief stronger.

The lift bolts is a very common problem of Tsports. I have never heard of oil-pump problems in Tsports.

It is very easy to check the lift bolts, so this would be the first think i would check, just to rule that out.

Cheers Mike.

Finally got a minute to check the lift bolts, these are totally fine bit of wear but nothing major.

Any ideas as to what to check next?

If I was you, I would be visiting a lawyer or at the very least, Citizens Advice. It would appear from what you say that you have been sold a car which is not of reasonable quality and not fit for purpose (or whatever the wording is) under the Sale of Goods Act. Do it ASAP as your case will weaken with the passage of time.

It is a PITA spending your hard earned cash on something as major as a car and it turns out to be a dog. The garage/dealer who sold you it cannot wash their hands of it just because there is no warranty. It still has to be of reasonable quality and fit for purpose. As far as I know of course, I am not a lawyer!

Hiya all! I have been directed here form the toyota owners club forum where i have posted a similar request for info.
The jist of it is this, I get no lift, I get the engine management light on with a code of P1693 (OCV malfunction - closed) when i hit 6200 revs. I had my car with a toyota specialist who sent it of to a main dealer for active testing, they found everything working ok, they did an engine flush and oil change, the fault still occurs, I am awaiting a change of OCV filter. Any ideas from anybody else what else could be worng? any ideas welcome.

Thats deffinately a new one on me. Do you know if the basics have been checked? Like broken lift bolts?

To be fair though as Lift is regulated by oil pressure if you are being told the OCV (Oil Control Valve) is closed it will surely prevent Lift engagement and thus be your problem..... Did Toyota recommend replacingthe part or were they of the opinion there was absolutely NOTHING wrong with it?

I got it sorted! there was the a blockage in one of the filters from lack of use of the lift system.

Any one had a problem with a bad vibration at 5,000rpm. I thought it was the exhaust but it seems fine from what I can see and hear from under it. Sounds fine tic over. But all the gears seem to act the same at 5,000 sends a bad vibration up the peddle and around the dash. Rolla tsport. Lift is still fine. But you need to go past the 5k Mark and it doseny sound nice. :(

Just thought i would let you all know, engine in the corolla was totally destroyed!! Was speakin to a friend he was saying that if the incorrect viscosity oil is used it can wreck the ocv valve. Which might make sense as the engine was serviced just before i bought it. Unfortunately for me though during the short 1/2mile drive to garage the engine S**T itself confirmed only by pulling the sump and discovering half my engine sitting in it.

That's really unlucky dude, these engines are rock solid if serviced properly, like any Japanese engine to be honest.

This is why I tend to change my own oil because I know what's going in.. :dontgetit:

Yup when I bought mine I rang the garage that last serviced it and they had used totally the wrong oil n box oil. Luckily my healthy distrust in anything that breathes meant I made this call very quickly and amended the issue. Full service history doesnt mean **** if its been serviced by some halfwits who think its the 'good ol days' when you can put any crap in and itll be fine. The 2zz is a strong motor. But its highly strung. And wont take kindly to being messed with
