Ebc Brakes - Dusty!

Has anyone else here used EBC brakes?

How did you find them for brake dust?

These are what I have for my Yaris:

No complaints about the braking; The bite is good and the braking force is face-squishingly strong. :D

However, the dust they produce seems immense, esp. compared to the stock blue Toyota OEM pads that are normally fitted to Yaris Mk1's!

The GreenStuff pads are supposed to be made of aramid fibres whereas the Toyota ones look like they're semi-metallic so you'd think the Toyota pads would produce loads of dust.

In reality, my front wheels are already coated with more brake dust after barely a week with the GreenStuff than they would be after a year with the Toyota ones!

What's up with that?!

No direct experience but sounds logical to me. Higher friction is usually got by using a softer material.

Softer material will wear away quicker.

Therefore more dust (and presumably shorter pad life).

One of life's great compromises I suspect.

I don't know, so much conflicting information!

I'm mostly disappointed because they are specifically advertised as having 60-90% less dust than other pads whereas I'd say they were 500% more dusty than the blue Toyota pads!

I was hoping other users of EBC Greenstuff pads (I'm looking at you CRRPI know you put these on too some years back! :P) could shed some light, e.g. if the dust is just from the 'wearing in layer' on the pads (And possibly the discs? Both are new!) and that it'll get better once it has worn through that, or if I can expect this level of dust production for the life of the pads?

(If that's the case, I'll be glad if they wear through faster so I can change them!)

Well, for the 2000 (which yours should be) EBC says "The latest version of Greenstuff is a deliberately softer compound to improve pedal feel on lighter cars at lower speeds. This resulted in a medium dust material with good lifetime and minimal rotor wear."

Which doesn't sound like "low dust" to me.

Later on it says "The EBC pad creates less dust and dust is more easily washed off than most. All pads create more dust as they are bedding in especially if rotors are worn."

That first sentence is vague to say the least - could be 'less' than our cheapskate, knock-off competitors in [foreign country] products.

There I a benefit in this. I also own a Mazda MX5 which does not get much running. The original Mazda pads were metallic, like Toyota, very little dust, however they did not keep the discs clean, with the result I had to renew all pads and discs at around 15,000 miles. I replaced with Apec discs and pads, softer pads, more dust, but they keep the discs clean. Every cloud has a silver lining!

Regards Geoff Peace.

Y'know, I have noticed the the discs have been a lot shinier than they were before. I just assumed it was because the EBC discs were more resistant to corrosion

I think we can conclude that they are performing normally and the 'less-dust' thing is just a load of horse !Removed!. :(

(Maybe they mean less dust than a volcano eruption  )

The dust is already welding itself to my lovely powdercoated alloys too so I'll actually have to start cleaning the car more regularly again! :crybaby::lol:
