Hi everyone, I have a 1999 avensis 1,8 and when it,s got up to temp the idle seems a bit rough. I done all plugs etc but no joy. Think it may be thr coilpacks......Any ideas

Thanks

The throttle body is a common cause of lumpy idle on early Avensis. remove the throttle body and using carb' cleaner and a very fine grit sand paper clean the throttle body around the area the butterfly valve operates, this is usually covered in a sticky oily mess which stops the butterfly valve moving smoothly

For the last 4/5 months I have had near enough the same fault as what you've got. I already removed and cleaned the throttle body and even replaced it with one from a breakers and had exactly the same results. A toyota specialist looked at the car and also mentioned it could possibly be the coil packs.

I haven't changed mine yet but probably will do in the next few weeks.

Ok just to update I changed the 4 ignition coils and bought 4 denso coils from a breakers and still have exactly the same results.

I would have thought faulty coil packs would cause a misfire or cut out altogether, have checked for leaks on any of the tubing on the air intake side

Hi Larry, If you have the 1.8 7A-FE engine like mine, make sure the HT leads are firmly connected home and tight on the spark plugs. The HT leads take a lot of punishment and two are in use at the same time during each ignition spark, to make the complete circuit.

Whilst on the subject of HT leads, what I said above means that the HT leads have to be of very good quality or they will fail quickly. This goes for the spark plugs too. Only original Iridium will do in my book (and owners manual).

The other thing could be the injectors, but that is a guess.

If you have the vvti engine then coil packs may need to be looked at. A diagnostic check may be needed.

HI konrad, yes m8 mine is a 1.87a-fe unit, ....the ht leads are all ok. iv just cleaned out the throttle body but no joy??? im now thinking it may be the cam belt is a bit out of time. i mean it drives a1. its just on idle when hot. as for the spark plugs.all done. ill see what i find out when i look at the cambelt

Thanks Larry. The problem I have is that my throttle body is a sealed unit and there is no way I can remove the icv or tps if it has one.

Hi Larry, I would not think it is the cambelt, but if it due for change, get the Gates kit with a new tensioner.

Make sure all the vacuum pipes are connected and there are no leaks.

Also look at the vacuum switch which controls the inlet valves. I had the lever disconnected and had to re-attach it.

The other area to look at is the fuel system - filter and injectors.

All the I can give.
