Wheel Size?

Hi,

Still trying to decide what wheels to get for my Rav, can anyone tell me what 'J' size my current wheels are? The tyres are 215/70 x 16 , is this a 7J wheel?

You have a variety of options, taking the wheel size up to 20"

The tyre size will vary as you need to preserve the speedo reading within 10% of accuracy.

I'm running a 245/45x18 wheel and tyre set just now but I can't remember the offset - its more than standard. I'll need to look back on the invoice!

Hi Ian,

Do those fill the wheel arches out better than std ones? I'm looking for a slightly more chunky look, but not sure whether to keep to the 16" wheels but go wider or move up to 17" or 18" which would probably be 8J's. Although they won't be easy to keep clean, I'm still leaning towards Lenso BSX all silver in a 17 or 18", shod with Falken ZE914 tyres.

I was using a set of 18" wheels with 225 / 40 I think which looked far too small. Have changed back up to 245/45 x 18 which is close to the original 215/70 x 16 - I use Dare alloys with 6 or 7 spoke in a gunmetal colour which goes with my silver RAVs rather well.

I found an email with a conversation on the wheels -

I luckily found the spare wheel from the

Dare range whilst raking around my garage. Forgot I even had it !! It has 18 x 81/2 JJ cast inside it. Dunno if

it was Dare Drift or Dare Diesel - 6 spokes anyway.

So I have at least 1 set of these fitted!

I meant to add that I use Falkens on 2 sets of wheels. The third set has a similar tread pattern to the Falken but was slightly cheaper.

One benefit of going with a lower profile tyre I found was having a blow-out at 100mph made no difference to the handling. On the other hand, the ride is a bit harder but cornering ability is firmer.

of 18 x 8 on the front and 18 x 9 on the rear ! Can this be right? I'd got it in my mind that on a 4x4 the wheels/tyres had to be the same size all round.

Remember the WHEEL size is not the same as the TYRE size :) you could easily have different wheel widths but still end up with the same rolling radius wheels when fitted with same tyres, but would be a bit pointless I'd have thought.

The J value refers to a 'style' of wheel recess design and the wheel width. I would have thought a 9J wheel would actually be too wide for the tyres you would be likely be putting on the car unless you are going for one of these weird 'stretch' effects!

Hi David,

When I put the wheel & tyre combination into an online wheel and fitment calculator, the rolling radius was virtually identical, just wasn't sure if, with all four wheels being driven wider wheels on the back would damage the gearbox or transfer box in any way. I'm not looking for anything too radical, just a slightly chunkier look than normal and wheels that fill the wheel arches out a bit better. I'm still leaning towards the Calibre Vintage wheels in all silver, 18 x 8J with 245/45 x 18 Falken ZE912 tyres.

Just one thing - the wheels on each axle have to be the same, so if you fit different sizes you need to think about the spare.

Be good to keep the wheels all the same for flexibility and allow tyre rotation. You could consider using spacers to push out the rear wheels a bit I suppose? This is how the multifit wheel kits deal with the different offsets, but need to make sure the wheels are still properly supported centrally and not just on the nuts/studs.
