Presuming this is a skinny spare, the penny must have dropped somewhere - Well, at least a half-penny!

Onward and upward, guys...

The jack is stowed on the right hand side behind the panel where you'd think you'd find access to the RH rear light cluster ... :)

But what's the round doughnut shaped thing for? :D

The jack lives here ...

Remember the Krypton Factor......? The task here is to remove the jack, walk once round the car with jack in hand, and then remember how the far king thing fitted in there, and can you refit it withoot it rattling like a banshee over traffic bumps.....LOL.

Kev,

I know where the jack "lives".

After checking, then getting in touch with the dealer, was passed onto TGB to be politely told that "why on earth would we supply you with a jack when we don't even give you a spare ?"

So do they expect you to cough up for a spare wheel, and a jack.....after paying all that fra new Rav FFS......???

For what it be worth, IMHO they are phasing them in as the UNORDERED tyres become available, quietly....stealthily......unheralded......coz they know they made a complete AIRSE of it omitting them in the first place.

Has anyone worked out yet

- will this space saver fit (ie backwards compatible) the 4.3 ? Ours is a 2010 2.2 D4-D XTR with the standard 17" alloys - sorry don't know the actual wheel size but the tyres are 225/65R17.

- is it/will it be available as a seperate spare part. Last time I asked it was going to be sometime next year. Apparently there is a world shortage of the skinny tyres as they are made in a batch only once a year - so much for 'supplly and demand' !!

I'm off to the dealers now to find the oh-so-smooth salesman I met when we bought our Rav. "The spare tyre ?" ... a little laugh to himself ... "Oh NO, Sir, you JUST don't understand, Sir, do you, Sir, you see carrying a spare with you everywhere is SO last year, Sir, you JUST don't need one, Sir, here's the aerosol of gunk, Sir, that's all you need nowadays, Sir, etc etc etc". YEAH RIGHT !!

(and please don't get me started on the runflats on our beemer !!)

Some neighbours of ours got stuck with a gashed sidewall on their new Nissan Juke. No spare, just aerosol goop and a toy inflator. Not realising that their new car didn't come with any kind of usable spare wheel, they went back to their Nissan-Renault dealer to enquire about the availability of a full-sized spare wheel.

Answers:

1. There isn't room in the boot for such a thing.

2. We can provide you with a space-saver spare.

3. We can also provide you with a wheel-brace and jack.

OK, that'll do nicely.

4. Please step this way to Parts Counter, where we will relieve you of €600.

They did. And never, ever again.

Moral: Insist of what you need when you buy the car. Everything is available; you just need to insist (or walk away).

Ha ha. I said "don't get me started" !! Not rising to that !! Sorry, not a subject for this forum - the sevaral BMW forums have lots of opinion on them - mostly negative ! But the overall sentiment is the same - like many drivers I feel more comfortable with a spare of some sort in the boot. And I personally don't like being given a load of BS salestalk - then 3 yrs later Toyota re-fitting the missing spare !!

But, yes, we did buy the Rav. And generally we're v. pleased with it !

The question is not so much what you do with the space saver, but more what do you do with the full sized wheel that you took off? If no room for a full sized wheel in the boot, then not a lot of good swapping it out ;)

Yes I think so ...

  • Your 225/65R17 has an effective diameter of 28.5"
  • My 235/55R18 has an effective diameter of 28.2"
  • And the space saver is a 165/80D17 which has an effective diameter of 27.4" though I guess as it's inflated to a much higher pressure that probably makes up the difference.

The fittings are certainly the same.

So does mine ... but the space saver spare is on a 17" steel rim that will fit a RAV on 17" wheels just as well as it does yours and mine. The profiles of the tyres used on the different RAV wheels makes the effective diameter pretty much the same across the board.
