Yaris 1.4 Tr Conrod Smashed Through The Block Little Problem!

Has anyone else experienced this problem..... This car (Yaris 1.4 TR Deisel) was purchased with 33k on the clock, an 09 model in 2011. I have clocked up another 21k miles making the total 54k.

I recently took the car to Sims in Northampton Toyota Dealer (where the car was purchased from) because it was excessively burning oil. They looked at the car for the day, and commented that there was nothing wrong and charged £58. They also said to come back in 1000 miles to have the oil levels checked again. I did not want to do this and get charged another £58 so i had been checking the oil myself which i am more than capable of doing so having previously owned a fleet of vehicles in my transport company.

I was driving along at between 68/70 miles per hour (no lights came up on the dash) when there was one hell of a bang/crash grind etc. I managed to drift into a farm gateway by pressing on the clutch. Thinking i was going to get out to see maybe a flat tyre, but to my amazement there was a big hole in the side of the block where the conrod had smashed through it.

I was no more than 100 yards from a car rescue premises who picked the car up and took it back to their storage yard.. Went back to Sims of Northampton and explained the situation. The response from the Service Staff was "have you got extended warranty" which i havent' so they simply shrugged their shoulders and said "oh well".

I then got in touch with Toyota Customer Services who offered to perform an investigation on it for over £400 + plus my cost to get the car there and back!

I Ended up selling the car for £2000 as not worth the hassle or extra expense. So all in all i lost £6500 over 2 years so i will never buy a Toyota again. Good luck with yours .

I am not trying to undermine what our local dealership offered as I appreciate that sometimes these things do happen. The car was faultless up to the incident. My problem is with the attitude of the staff, plus the fact that they wanted to charge me a lot of money just to investigate the failure of one of their engines. I would have hoped that at the very least they could have taken a quick look and said that it was this or that problem, whatever the issue was. And without the £400 charge thank you! I wasn't expecting them to sort it out for free as they had no obligation to do so because as I had no further warranty with them. A bit of fair play would have been the decent thing to do.

It wouldnt be a quick look though to determine an exact cause. It would be an engine out job. The £400 would be to do the strip inspection and report. If the car has a full history ie services from a vat registered garage every 10k/1year they could open a C/R case and see if Toyota would put any good will forward.

If it had been found to be through misuse would would pay the dealer? they would have had a ramp out of action for several days.

Broken conrods are usualy caused by the piston seizing in the bore due to lack of oil.

At least the one in my Min did in 1973.

Or the big end bearing cap becoming detached.
