Throttle Pedal Too Soft?

I seem to be having trouble getting used to a manual box again after 13 years of a clutch pedal less Smart. What is strange is that I have hired a few manual vans and driven a fair few different manual cars in that time with very little trouble using the clutch and throttle pedals.

It seem the gas pedal on the IQ is very soft, like too easy to press. The Smart had a "fly by wire" incranometer type gas pedal as well, not hard to press but, had like most other cars and vans I have driven a little more resistance.

I seem to be either stalling, or over revving when pulling off. I've only managed about 300 miles so far, so do you think I will get used to it, or do you think I could add a spring somewhere to give a little more feedback. I haven't looked to see if a spring is possible yet as it's been far too wet to grovel on my knees to see what's what.

Any comments would be useful, well constructive ones would be. (No, I ain't got lead boots on!)

Thanks Guys.

Apart from this, I really love this car, the Smart was like a toy compared.

I do think you will get used to it. I went from a daily Peugeot 406 and various work cars only finding the Astra being very light but was a pleasant relief. There is a 4 inch or so spring that possibly you could "tweek" but not sure if your insurance company would be happy about it

Hi David,

Mmm, If Toyota insurance don't want to know about mods as simple as
this, I hate to think what they will think about wider wheels. If they
don't like it I will go back to my old broker and use the insurance
company that know me and don't mind sensible mods. My Smart had uprated
everything and I only got charged an extra £15 for the £1000 custom
exhaust and wheels. Everything else was free and legal providing I declaired them.

I will persivere for a while and see how it goes.

I think you will get used to over time, When I drive the wife Grande Punto it feels !Removed! awful now, but before I got my iQ I thought it was a decent drive.

The spring is fully retracted in its normal state and stretched on pedal press. Reckon it would need to be 1/2 inch shorter to feel a difference. Anyway, think you will get used to it

When I first got my iQ3 I stalled it quite a few times and it took some time to get used to it.

I think part of the problem is the electronic throttle motor. When my engine is cold the engine revs higher every time you change gear even though you take your foot off the pedal and if you change gear at high revs the throttle doesn't seem to be able to close fast enough to prevent the engine from revving while you have the clutch depressed. Slow reactions it seems from the motor controlling the throttle butterfly.

Having said that you do get used to it and it's not really a race car so 99% of the time it's not a problem.

Give it a few more miles and I reckon you'll be fine. :)

Thanks Craig,

That's exactly what seems to be happening, I thought it was just me. I will have to try harder. If every one else can get the hang of it, I'm sure I can. :)
