New Pistons On 2009 Yaris

Hi new member here,

Yaris 2009 bought from new with just under 20,000 on the clock.

Noise coming from the engine lasting 2 to 3 minutes when cold then disappears when the engine warms up.

Got it checked out with local London Toyota dealer. They quoted £66 for the inspection. Inspection lasted about on hour and they said new pistons were needed.

Quoted over £4,000 but reduced to £1,670 after complaining.

Feel that I am being ripped off.

Would the pistons really go on a car driven less than 20,000 miles?

Car serviced at specified intervals at Toyota dealers.

Many thanks in advance for your help

Did your dealer say why?

You could approach another Toyota dealer for a second opinion.

As the car has a Toyota service history, why not approach Toyota re a possible goodwill contribution.

Hi and many thanks for your reply.

The dealer gave no explanation as to why the pistons needed replacing.

The original quote was £4000+ reduced to £1670 after not accepting the £4000+. That for me made the alarm bells ringing.

Surely pistons shouldn't have to replaced after just 20,000 miles of careful driving?

Petrol or Diesel engine ?

Sounds like a severe case of piston slap = wear to bottom part of piston. When it expands through heat, the clearances vanish and the worn bit of the piston stops hitting the cylinder wall.

I suspect short journeys and an engine which never warms up...
