92 Hilux 2.4D Randomly Cutting Off, Cuts Off After Ignition, Pump?

Hi everyone

I have a 1992 Hilux surf SSR-G 2.4D turbo that has seen better days, but here in the Turks & Caicos my options are pretty slim.

Car has been running alright for the 3 months that I've owned it until yesterday when it suddenly cut off while driving.

I can start it back up and the car will remain running while the starter is engaged, and die once I let it go.

Randomly, it will start up and stay on. I can drive for a while before it cuts off once again.

As I said, it will run fine while the ignition is engaged, I can rev and everything, but I don't do this too long before letting it die (don't want to kill the starter). One trick I've found is that while it is running, switch it to higher idle speed, it will continue to run at the higher idle. It will die however, as soon as I shift into reverse or into too low of rpm. My current, terrible solution to move is to switch ignition, rev the engine and switch to higher idle rpm while doing so, then very quickly switch to drive and keep my foot on gas to get where I need to go, in this case just back to my apt. As soon as I stopped, the engine died.

I am assuming it is an issue with the fuel pump or primer pump. The fuel pump was recently replaced but I wouldn't be surprised if the local shop did a cruddy job. I just want to verify before I import a part, pay all the duties, have it installed only to see the problem is not gone

I took a picture of my fuel pump, I noticed some wires are disconnected/cut, was wondering if this could be related- my engine bay is a complete mess, all the previous owners have clearly done some really weird stuff to this car. The engine also gets covered in spatters of oil, something is not sealed quite right.

There is also a video of the problem- In this instance, after I let off the higher idle-revs, it stayed on, but usually it dies. Its completely intermittent and unreliable as transportation in its current state. You get the picture

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi my mate had a 2.4 with the same problems you seem to be faced with.It turned out to be the small earth bond at the very back of the engine that you can not see had come adrift. To test this out we put a jump lead to the earth post on the Battery and on to the liffting hook on the engine , she started and ran like a treat. Kind regards Mick.
