Trouble With Emissions

Just taken my 2011 3ltr invincible through its first MOT and had trouble passing due to emissions on the high side (The Mech said he had to blast it up and down the A19 for a few minutes before running it through to a pass).

its only done 21k

Its got one of Kingo's magic boxes on, could this be the cause?

Anyone else had this trouble?

Why not ask Kingo whether the tuning box could be affecting the emissions.

Do you do lots of short runs, the school run if you like, long runs or combined?

lots of short runs mostly, Work and back, round trip of 17 miles, town and up to 60mph on a stretch. down to Leeds once or twice a month, 150 miles round trip so I give it a blast then. The mechanic said modern diesels are not designed for pottering about, you have to give them a good blast now and again.

Hi Gareth, in basic terms due to modern day low emission standards engines recycle their own exhaust fumes or collect them internally in ways i am still discovering and they need what the slang term is 'An Italian Tune Up', that means a good thrashing down the road to clear all the muck out or they choke up and then have MOT emission problems. A guy i know that looked after a fleet of diesels used to book his MOT's in a garage say 20 miles away so he could thrash them/clear them out because when he used a local MOT centre they kept failing on emissions.

Right, so what we are saying here is all the fancy gubbins the manufacturers fit to the cars to lower emissions actually cause higher emissions if you use them normally! You couldn't make it up! also the mech told me that some makers now fit a reservoir which you have to fill periodically as its injected into the particulate filter, a small bottle costing around £70 from Ford. This mostly contains Urea that's distilled from pig *****!, I guess that's what the motor companies are taking out of their customers!

I have a 4 year old, 2010 Auris. Bought from a dealer second hand, had it 6 months.
Performance was sluggish (even for this model).
Toyota dealer inspected. Said it had a P6104 fault code. That the engine is chocked with carbon. That Toyota Technical Bulletin recommends replacement of gaskets, pistons and cylinder head with Toyota customised parts (so known fault).
Something about the EGR valve too.
(Log book shows that it has been serviced every year by the dealer, incidentally).
My question is - I bought the Toyota because I wanted a reliable, robust car.
Surely something this major shouldn't have got through quality control + testing!
It has done 22k miles.
It shouldn't be so coked up after 22k and 4 miles.
All they said to me was - tut, tut you shouldn't get your fuel from supermarkets, but Esso or Shell.
Cobblers.
Esso + Shell may have more detergents in the premium stuff, but the standard isn't much / any different from supermarket.
It all comes from the same tanks / source - ie. Carrington.
Toyota will not give me the Technical Bulletin that refers to the fault.
I would like to see the Tech Bulletin so I can see the extent of the Toyota design *****-up and weigh up whether it will recurr, how often - and whether I should just ditch the heap of junk.
I just feel like a I have bought a lemon - rather than something reliable.
If it can't handle four years of driving and 22k, then it isn't fit for purpose - even with replacement parts.

As regards supermarket and oil company branded petrol and diesel fuel, yes the base products are the same. However the additives they add to the tanker before transportation to the service stations are different. Hence the differences between brands.
