Oil Level On Dipstick - Difference Between Sides?

Hello all

I just recently checked the oil on our recently bought 2007 Aygo. I initially read the stick as having almost zero oil below the bottom dimple. So after adding 1.5 ltr the dipstick is showing maximum on one side of the dipstick and far too much (maybe double) on the other. I have tried to read the stick multiple time and this is what I keep getting. One side showing the correct amount and completely dry above the top dimple and then turn the stick over and it's right up beyond the dimple with far too high a level showing

Anyone have any experience of this? .... I'm afraid to damage the car if it's swimming in oil.

I find it near impossible to read the level on my oil stick, my aygo is in the latter part of it's life where it needs topping up every month or so, using a few litres over 10k miles. My Oil doesn't get dirty so alway near clear on the stick, the manual recommends reading the oil level a few minutes after switching off a warned up engine so for me is at the end of my journey mostly which isn't most convenient time. I find I have to touch the end of stick working out which is most tacky to gauge how far up the oil is.

Hi,

I have had this problem with both my Aygo's although the manual says check oil after a run I never do I always check it cold.

I withdraw the dip-stick and wipe it with a lint free cloth re insert it then withdraw and take the reading from the side of the dipstick thats facing away from you as taking a reading from the Aygo I found was always difficult to get a true reading.

I have had the same problem with most vehicles to varying degrees. I always take readings cold and I always fill so that the lowest reading meets the upper level on the dipstick. If the upper level is above the dipstick reading then so be it. It's not an exact science and the manufacturers build the engines to take this into account. Truth be told most car engines will run fine with a litre over/under so dont fret. The only issue with running oil at the minimum level is increased contamination at a lower mileage hence a quicker need to change it.

I've rebuilt so many different engines and seen the correlation between the sump/oil pickup/pump to know that the difference in levels you are experiencing is of no concern.
