Surf Ssr-X 3.0 (Auto) 1998 - Rear Diff Locking

Advice needed. I live in Cyprus (most of the time), only a handful of Surf's on the Island therefore local garages not that familiar with them although there are loads of Toyota twin cabs. Car has done 230,000 km but you wouldn't believe it as it still runs like a dream (until last week!) now when car has stood for several hours and I try to drive off, one or other of the rear wheels locks up, quite often its the off side wheel but can also be the near side. This is NOT hand brake/brakes locking its the rear differential. The only way to 'free' it up is to reverse for 10 meters or so then drive forward. I live in a remotish small town (Polis) so resources are limited, my local Cypriot mechanic is Nissan trained. Can anyone give advice on problem or does anyone know what other Hilux diff could be used as a replacement as there's loads of twin cab pick-ups around.

Hi SSRX,

Idon't have an answer for you, but think you might find some help from the hpoc.co.uk forum. I have an L200 up in Pano Lefkara, and know what you are going through with local knowledge if your pickup.

Have you check the oil level in the axle and does it only happen in 4wd drive ?

Thanks Dervdave, happens in all drive modes. Vehicle had full service in January, as no oil leaks at all I assume oil ok.
