Vsc Check And No Start?

Hi, I'm hoping someone will be able to help a new member and Toyota owner! Two weeks ago I bought a 2010 Avensis 2.0 D-4D T4, which I have been thrilled with. However, I went to use it today, and when trying to start it, there was a motor sound whirring, and then a 'check VSC system' warning on the dash. The car wouldn't start at all. Looking in the manual it suggests turning off the VSC which I don't seem to be able to do unless the car has started. I have turned off the bluetooth on my phone in case that has any impact as I seem to remember reading a few threads on here that seemed to indicate it did.

Can anyone please help? It may be something completely daft and obvious to everyone else (I'm really hoping so) but I am not particularly technically minded. I've also left it and come back 10 minutes later and it did exactly the same thing. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi Mazzab,

Is the engine cranking over at all or is it just making a strange whizzing noise? If it's just the strange whizzing noise I'd probably say that the starter motor has got a fault as it won't be engaging correctly.

How many miles has the car done, just out of interest by the way?

Hi Leeroy, it just makes the whirring noise at the moment, doesn't physically turn over. Done 180k, but toyota sales car, so FSH etc.

Ok, yeah it sounds like your starter motor is faulty. If you can see the motor (on gearbox) to try and get it going temporarily again, you could try tapping the motor halfway down with the wooden end of a hammer or similar. This is to try and release the starter wheel back off so you can then try and start the car again.

Thank you for that Leeroy. My partner jump started it and it then ran beautifully, took it for a 30 mile run to ensure I could get some charge back in it, and has been fine the last couple of days. Went to start it this morning and it's completely dead again. I was thinking about getting a new Battery for it, but was wondering what everyone here may recommend as there are the normal batteries and also the newer AMG ones that are supposedly specifically for the start/stop cars (and twice the price of course!). There car had been standing for a while on the garages forecourt while it was going through the original process of being sold, so I'm not sure whether that may have caused the issue. Once it started the other day I took it to a garage who were able to test the Battery and also the starter motor and alternator which they said were all showing fine. However, I had left the car running for 20-30 minutes to try and build up some charge, so this may be why?
