5Th Gear Snap Ring Placment

My wife's 51 plate RAV4 has got the same old 5th gear problem, jumping out of gear.

I have got the parts to rebuild it and have dry assembled the parts to check the assembly. But the drawing that I have is not very clear on the placement of the snap ring part no.90520-46035. This part has two lugs that are at 90°on the ends of the snap ring, any ideas of the correct placement of this item. I have looked on the other web sites and can only find photos of the repair but they do not mention this part.
