Caldina, Avensis Auto Gearbox

Hi everyone, help please, i have a 98 caldina, non turbo, 2.0 3SFE engine, my problem is the auto box, when slowing down gently the gearbox will change down into 1st to early, meaning when you accelerate again the revs are very high and it then snatches going into 2nd gear. Also when i use the kickdown it again goes down 2 gears, even though that puts the rev counter on the red immediatly, i even took the kickdown cable off, or what i thought was the kickdown cable, but it still kicks down, i am totally lost, any help please
