Rear Suspension

Following on from my tyre wear issue and broken rear spring. Tried to change it today.

Discovered that the lower suspension arm outer bush bolt has corroded itself into the bush. Broke three sockets trying to undo it. I ended up having to grind the bolt head off and nut to released the thing now need to replace the bush cos I still can't get the bolt out.

Anyone know if I can get new bushes and fixing bolts or do I need to replace the whole arm. It's the arm with the camber adjuster on it. Or any thoughts on how to get the remainder of the bolt out without scrapping the current bush.

Unfortunately the bush comes fitted to the control arm - not listed separately. If you removed the arm - a machine shop may be able to press out the remaining section of bolt. If you do remove the arm - mark up the relative position of the camber adjuster parts so you can maintain settings. It's a standard metric bolt but if you want to order from Toyota - bolt 90119-12131 and nut 90179-12091

All I had to undo to replace the rear springs is the shock bolt and the drop link bolt either top or bottom...there is no need to remove anything else....the spring will come out..

In any case you will find its the drive shaft that stops it moving lower and not the tie bars. .

The problem was the retaining bolts had corroded inside the bush so I could not get them out without a lot of hammering and brute force plus half a can of WD40. Pleased to say It is now done successfully.

WD40 is a waste of time with rusted up bolts etc - Plus Gas is far superior.

I find the penetrative fluid that the pound shops sell is very usefull..

Not heard of plus gas. Is that an aerosol spray as well. I don't think penetrating oil would have got in far enough. Once I was able to get the second side bolt back a little into the bush I could them fill that with WD40 and leave it to soak for about 30mins and then tease it the rest of the way. I was then able to reuse the bolt on reassembly which wasn't an option on the first side

as it simply would not give at all.

Plus Gas is available as a spray or liquid in various sizes. It's been used in the trade for many years. It's great for rusty bolt type issues whilst the likes of WD40 have wider application. Duck Oil is extensively used in the trade - similar to WD40 but better / cheaper when used in a trigger bottle. It's best to avoid anything containing silicon.
