Yaris Verso Faults

I hope that someone can help me and get the wife off my back.

I have had a problem with my wife’s 2002 Yaris 1.4 D-4D Verso there is an intermittent fault with the throttle position switch. She was towed by the AA to my local dealer and the switch was cleaned up and everything was OK. I think that the switch is playing up again and I was thinking of buy an OBD2 reader but after some research on the internet some of the suppliers say that the Yaris diesel may not be OBD2 compliant before 2004. My wife said that the AA man connected something to the car and found the fault.
I don’t want to spend a fortune on a reader as I am not a professional mechanic. Does anyone know if my Yaris is OBD2 compliant and can anyone recommend a fault reader?
