maybe someone can help in this section.

noise goes away after a few minutes maybe when the oil reaches the top?

watch the first video, pay attention to 0.17 secs and 0.27 secs its like kind of a rumble, kind of a cylcic noise.

Sounds OK but very noisy possibly due to wear and tear. I don't think there's anything seriously untoward. When was the timing belt, tensioner and coolant pump last changed? Tensioners and coolant pump bearings can rumble but improve as things warm up.

It does have that grumbly water pump bearing noise to me, but tensioners should also be checked

Just played it through headphones...I can hear it now...the rumble..no idea what it is though...

Sounds like exhaust on bodywork...but you say its from the engine?????

These engines sound even worse through headphones. ...noisy piles of kack.....if I get a chance I will post up a video of my noisy pile of clanging metal..

It seems noisier after the belt pullys and water pump change...or it might just be me..... my injection pump had a bit of freeplay on the shaft...in and out...suposed wacking it with a lump hammer and chisel didnt help.....had to free it from the water pump....it was corroded together..

Thank you guys, Timing belt and water pump is on the to do list, wallet needs to recover from clutch and flywheel change, surprisingly its coming from the passenger side of engine- I'm certain its the airbox due to the vibrations from engine when cold.

Have listen to the oil sump when you start up, if it's coming from there it's a blocked oil pickup sieve, only does it when cold. If it is drop sump and clean straight away otherwise you will blow your turbo. Easy job to do.

The noise goes away when I hold the airbox- have you had this problem with a blocked oil pickup sieve and was the noise exactly the same?

Sounds similar, had the sieve block twice on my Rav, it's a very metallic sound and you can hear it if you get under the car and listen to the sump, it's the sieve cavitating as the engine is try to pull up the oil, once the oil has warmed slightly after about half minute it is ok. If you hold the air box and it stops then I should go with that, I also had the air intake on the bonnet make a very worring vibration which was sorted with a tap. Don't give it to toyota otherwise you will need a new turbo, big end bearings etc etc ! If you think that's it then I suggest you fix it and see if it's ok after that and keep an eye on gauges and warning lights

I had similar sound for a week then the oil light came on. Knocking from engine so it was turned off straight away but the engine is seized :-( oil strainer in sump is completely blocked with black deposits and there's silver shavings in the sump :-(

I'm guessing the big end bearing has gone. Any other suggestions as I guess the turbo would not leave silver slithers in the sump?

Terminal? Any ideas how difficult it is to remove the engine and if it has to come out with the gearbox?

My noise has gone or does when you hold the air box- the foam on the air intake pipe where it connects to the air box- the insulation had perished so I have used some foam to create a padding.

I have not had any engine lights- I service it using 5/30 Toyota oil.

The problem was one of the injector oil seals leaking. Apparently Toyota have revised the seal but never did a recall. Result is one injector stuck in the head and crud all over the oil pick up strainer. Engine is worthless as new cranks are like gold dust and if you polish them there are no oversize bearings to fit it. Local Toyota man has three in with same problem. Only option is write off or new engine.

I would strongly advise anyone with a 1CD-FTV engine to change the injector seals, use engine oil flush and check your strainer.

Does anyone know if an Avensis or Corolla 1CD-FTV will fit the Rav4 and if so what parts from the rav4 engine will I need to transfer over - mounts, intercooler etc??

how loud was the noise before it went?

It was a relatively quiet rattle which disappeared above 1200rpm and was only when cold.

It's a 2002 Rav with 120,000miles run on Shell VPower and serviced by Toyota for the most part of its life.

Aftermarket O/S bearings are available for the 1CD-FTV engine.

Arco, for one, list 2 oversizes for big end and main bearings. You can view the bearing catalogue at http://www.arcomotor.com

They often list parts for the 1CD-FTV on eBay. A motor factor or engine rebuilder should be able to order bearings for you.

Unfortunately I don't have a catalogue, but I'd also expect Kolbenshmidt to do these bearings.

Great, thanks. I did pick up a 2nd hand Corolla engine but may try to rebuild this one too as prior to the oil pick up problem this has been really well looked after.

are your 1cd-ftv the 110bhp or the 115bhp?

is this problem more common 110 or 115?
