1988 2Wd Hilux Rebirth

Was given a 1988 Hilux diesel twin cab ute which is to be used for dragging fallen trees off tracks and hauling firewood on a rural property.

It has done 430,000 km and for the last 200,000 km/20 years has been pretty much neglected. The previous owner, a friend, kept telling me that he " isn't mechanically inclined" but that didn't stop him from carrying out "repairs".

When I had this thing towed over the Battery was cactus, the cooling system dry, the motor oil black treacle and the wiring, well, it's a disgrace, but after a bit of fiddling around I had it running and took it for a short drive. I was pleased that there was no exhaust smoke and the motor sounds fine.

My first question - By chance I had a Gregory's Service Manual for Toyota Hi-Ace 1983 - 1989 lying around and the pics and photos of the motor in the manual look to be pretty much identical to my motor, Engine # 2L 1732245. Would this manual be of assistance with doing some basic work on my Hilux ?? I'm no newcomer to mechanical stuff by the way.

Next week or so i plan to change all fluids, replace the timing belt ( maybe new water pump ) and go over the brakes. Question 2 is - how available are parts for this ute from the dealers, or will I need to chase bits from wreckers/breakers ?

Have ordered new timing belt and the parts needed to get this old clunker's motor running properly, and have read Manxman's epic journey with his Hilux - whew what a persistent man he is ! ! !

Did a search on the Hilux Forum and have found all the info I need to tackle my tasks, with pics - very helpful Forum indeed. I suspect I will be needing a new water pump as the motor has done 430,000 kms.
