Iq2 Auto 2Nd Service

Folks, I've read some of the previous posts about 2nd services. It's a bit confusing.

My call to the local dealer to book went like this:

If I supply the oil, can you quote me for an IQ second service? The car has done 14,000 miles

I was quoted approx as follows

Service 160

Options, brake fluid 39, pollen Filter 35 ish, emissions test 20

S I'm going to say no to emissions test as I have some sea foam if I need or want to use it

Confused about what to do about the brake fluid and pollen filter

Please advise what you.d do?

Cheers!

Just an INDICATION:

I've paid 221 €(!) for the second service in early May 2014.

The price included 11 € for an oil filter, 40 € for the oil, 33 € for the pollen filter and 16 € for the brake fluid. (franchised Toyota dealer, 16,000 km)

According to Toyota's Fixed Price Service scheme the two year service is £195 inclusive. Brake fuid should be renewed every two years, which is what every manufacturer we've had cars from, adhere to.

As regards a pollen filter, they're easy to change yourself. Have a look at Amazon to see what prices they can do a pollen filter for - see

http://www.amazon.co.uk/b/ref=nav-sa-diy-tools-car?_encoding=UTF8&node=4862991031

Or send Parts King a personal message, detailing your car and what you want, and he will provide a price.

Thanks, so in the Fixed price service cost of 195, should that include the brake fluid change? If not, why is it optional according to the dealer, and at additional cost?

Brake fluid changes are a chargeable extra over the servicing cost.......Expect to pay approx £40

Service intervals are either every 12 months or every 10,000 miles - whichever occurs first.

So for those owners who adhere to the mileage based servicing regime (ie services every 10,000 miles as they do more than 10,000 miles in a year), the brake fluid change won't be needed until the car is two years old.

For those owners who adhere to the time based servicing regime (ie services every 12 months as they do 10,000 miles or less in a year), the brake fluid change will be needed every two years.

That is why the brake fluid change is a chargeable extra

I went on the Toyota website to see what's due for mine at 50k. What a crock, I wouldn't pay 130 or what it was for basically an oil change and for some spotty 16 year old to do a load of visual checks that I could do myself, basically paying for a stamp in the book. No thanks. Done the oil myself and plan on doing the transmission oil soon too. I think people over estimate how much stamps add to the value of a vehicle. I think receipts are just as good. There's no proof half the stuffs been done anyway, unless your stood over them and watching. I know other mechanics that are on very tight schedules at dealerships and I doubt everything is done as stated on paperwork. How would you know they changed brake fluid etc?

In fact Toyota service prices aren't bad compared to other makes, and at least Toyota's fixed price service scheme can be used from the first service, rather than some other manufacturer fixed price schemes which apply when the car is three years old plus (ie VAG).

The intermediate service for the IQ costs £125: the VW minor service is £149; Mazda 2 and Hyundai i20 minor services cost around £199.

A large part of any service nowadays is inspection across most manufacturer dealer networks, and you can question whether any of it has been done. However, at the end of the day the technician has signed the paperwork to say they have done what is on the schedule.

Also it isn't just having a stamp in the book. Some people don't have the time or inclination to service their cars.

Have the car serviced at an independent or by yourself and usually you wave goodbye to any goodwill contribution from the manufacturer should something major go wrong when the car is outside warranty. Independents also don't have access to any update information that may be applicable to your car.

Personal choice - pay someone for servicing or do it yourself. There are drawbacks to both.

It wasn't aimed as a dig at toyota, more about paying a high amount for visual checks, which really does come down in the majority of cases just to get a stamp in the book. I'd wonder how much they state that the vast majority of the service is based around visual checks?! I'm sure if they did people would question it more. I think most people just see it as a 'service' so it's something they need to do.

Most manufacturers provide service schedules within their Service & Warranty books, and these state what items are inspected, adjusted or replaced as part of each type of service.

Some manufacturers also publish similar information on their website - for example, Toyota publish service schedules on their website - see 'compare servicing info' on; http://www.toyota.co.uk/service-and-maintenance/car-servicing

The service checklist completed by technicians during the service, states which items were inspected, adjusted or replaced.

The Visual Safety Report completed by technicians during the service, states which items were visually inspected, and states whether the items were in good condition at the time of the inspection, needed an advisory, or needed urgent attention.

The information is there for owners to see, if they wish, so the fact that services consist of a high level of checking, visual or otherwise, shouldn't be a surprise.
