Yaris Automatic Trouble

Hi, anyone have trouble driving down hills when in automatic ? My 63 plate trend likes to dramatically rev from 2-3 thousand revs once decending so now I use the manual paddles to avoid a heart attack. Its first service is due soon so hope toyota can sort it. Cheers!

This is not a fault if you come of the throttle fast or brake hard enough when going down a steep enough hill the car will lower the gearing to provide you with engine braking to help you slow down and reduce the load on the brakes, this is perfectly normal and a function programmed into the control systems of the car it cannot be removed.

Without it the car would accelerate as you go down a steep hill and you would wear your brakes out quickly.

I drive a CVT Yaris too and can reduce the affect by just reducing my throttle input rather then coming off the throttle all together and my braking more gently even then I cannot stop the car from "changing down" if the hill is steep enough unless as you do I take manual control..

Clever, isn't it......I love this feature on my CVT Yaris

Thanks for this as have only had the automatic a month and still not sure about hills! Have read in manual about the Paddles but not really knowing when I would use them! The salesman said I would rarely need to as engine changes down for you but am concerned that would not feel in control coming down a steep hill.

my general advice is to just gently pump the brake every so often, not keep it fully pressed down all the time unless you need to stop. My automated manual gear box doesn't even gear down on hills so I often take control with the paddles to keep it in a lower gear.

Think you just need a bit longer to become accustomed to how the car drives.

Thanks for your replies. Been driving 33yrs and this is my first automatic which is taking some getting used to regarding this matter.

My first automatic too (44 yrs driving) so it is also taking me a while to get used to some situations! Though finding it much pleasanter to drive than the manual generally.
