Project Thread: Orta's Daily 2.2 Sr

Hi All,

Had the Auris for 18 months now and realized I'd only ever posted a few snaps on the 'Auris Pics' thread. I've had similar project threads on other forums for my weekend car (306 GTi-6 on Throttle Bodies and racing cams) and wanted one for the daily driver as well!

It's useful for me to track the cars changes, trials and tribulations, but it may also be useful for others as it'll not only track the changes and modifications to the car but also daily issues and fixes etc. I may come across during my ownership. And also, hopefully, a place where I can get advise or opinions from fellow Auris owners.

Right, the car then. Bought it in Feb last year for a little too much, but bought it from a main dealer with only 34,000 on the clock and a full Toyota service history. Wanted something that blended performance and economy and hoping for the impeccable reliability Toyota is famous for.

It's a 2008 SR-180 5 door in Red. It's got keyless entry and ignition button which is quite cool. However I was disappointed that I didn't hold out for one with Satnav and bluetooth but hey ho.

For up to date MPG check my signature, I use a clever site called spritmonitor where you can enter all the costs the car incurs to work out it's cost over your ownership. Anyway the icon in the bottom will always update.

So anyway the day I go it:

So nothing happened much for a while other than fitting an OEM iPod connector to the OEM stereo (Keeping it looking standard). Unfortunately Toyota only supply the old style connection so can't hook up my iPhone 5. But a quick search of a bay of E yielded a converter so job done! The out is in the upper compartment above the glovebox. No pics of this though!!

Next up was painting the calipers. Went with Red as this is the paint I had laying around I'd used on my weekend car. Pleased with the result when I did it. Although it needs redoing now really.

I also did a spot of debadging at the same time as you can see in the pics. I lost the "Toyota" on the rear and the "D-Cat" on the front wings.

Pics:

So nothing happened for a while mainly because I changed jobs and we moved house. But also because my paintwork began to blister! I don't have any pictures anymore of the areas but people will have seen this happen on Red Toyota's before. I was disappointed to say the least.

The car went into the bodyshop and the effected panels were resprayed. These were bonnet, front bumper, roof, and mirror caps.

The car came back and I couldn't be happier, not only was the paint job awesome but I got rid of the horrid courtesy Yaris!

Some glory shots on it's first day back

Then this morning (Making the most of my three day weekend) I spent a few hours cleaning and polishing. Only for us to have a random shower...

Check out the beading though!!

So after it rained I thought it high time I did a few more changes. Most of my time has been taken up with house stuff and working on the weekend car but wanted to get to changing something.

First mod is something really popular on the Peugeot scene at the moment and to be fair can be a bit marmite. It does look better on retro cars but I think it looks pretty cool on the Auris as well. Yellow fogs!

Before & after shots attached ;-)

I had previously bebadged the car. Think the "D-Cat" on the wings is the most random badges on a car ever. Anyway, I'd previously left just the "Auris SR-180" bundle of badges on the rear. But today, wanting to mix this thing up a little bit, removed the Auris badging as well. Leaving just the "SR-180".

Now it does look cleaner, but I'm still not 100% it doesn't look a little lost? opinions?

After I'd cleaning the car AGAIN, after the random rain had finished I took it for a spin down my favourite country lanes and came out in Harlaxton. So here's a few random glory shots outside the gates to Harlaxton Manor. (note the yellow fogs ;-) )

Final thoughts then. Attached pictures of my misted Headlights (Plans are to replace them with some fresh new units). It's a weird kind of mistiness I've never seen before. It's not dirt on the outside as I'd given it some serious elbow grease and time trying to clean them up. I think before I buy new ones I'll have them off and apart just to see if it'll clean off from inside before investing.

Also, attached a pic of my weekend car, my 1998 Peugeot 306 GTi-6 (They're getting rare!) it's running over 200bhp with throttle bodies, cams, amongst other mods.

Then the last picture is of my button cluster near the driver's door. Anyone know what I'm missing there?? What are the blanks for??

Yes, the blank on the left side of the mirror is for the ECO. This is for the 1.33 engines from 2009 or 2010.

The blank to the left of the mirror control, is used in the 1.33 (introduced November 2008) for the switch to disable the stop/start system.

Nice work on the cleaning front

Never been a fan of ze fog lights de francais, but each to their own.

As for the lonesome SR Badge - how about putting one of those TRD badges on to compliment it ? :)

At £120 I'd be giving that a quick pass I'm afraid, lol.

Latest addition. Must be the most adult mod I've ever done but needs must...

Got a black lab puppy a few months ago and he's outgrown the puppy travelling cage we got him so needs room to roam around in the boot. So picked this up from Halfords this morning and fitted just now.

Only word of warning for anyone looking to do this in the future is the strange white box thing that looks like some part of the car's systems located on the right hand side of the boot just where you want to put one arm of the cage. Then on the other side the car's design means the metalwork slops away so there's nothing firm to attach it to! Meaning I've had to put a very high tech piece of word in there!

Anyway, pics are finished article...

Car hasn't moved forward at all but grabbed a few glory shots at Blythe today when I went to meet with a few old friends from Briskoda at the national Skoda meet held there this morning.

Update...

Hit a rabbit on the way last night. Following by hearing the wheel catching against something. Pulled over and found the whole of my plastic arch liner was coming away and was interacting with wheel.

Got home and jacked her up... ripped out the broken pieces to be left with this gapping hole!!

Anyone know the part number for the arch liner and bottom of the front bumper liner ?

Well got around to fixing the wheel arch today. Went to Toyota to price up the part originally and they wanted over £150 !! + VAT. I told them thanks but no thanks.

A quick search of eBay yielded one for £41 all in including postage. Then an extra £5 for some clips. So quite happy...

Pics shows the arch in. It doesn't look as good as the original Toyota piece but it does the job well enough.

Picture 1 shows where when getting under the car to have a goose at the wheel arch I found the sump guard has been attached by sodding cable ties! Bit disappointed by this as until me the car hasn't been outside the Toyota dealer network so it's a Toyota technician who has done this!!

Also, did a spot of camping at the beginning of the week, so was time for a quick couple of snaps with car and tent ;-)

Presumably there is nothing to prove who re-attached the sump guard - could have been damaged and re-attached by the previous owner. One will never know!
