Rav4 Using Loads Of Petrol.!

Hi there Can anyone please help with any suggestions on what the problem could be or does anyone know of a garage around Leeds, Wakefield area of West Yorks who has experience with the earlier Rav4 (W Reg Year 2000) which is the mark 1, 2.0 Petrol engine, where I could take her, to be plugged into a diagnostic machine and setup to run more economically.!!! I know these Rav4 are not the most economical but im only getting 18-20 mpg. Ive had her for around 18mths now and originally I was getting around 30 mpg. Shes also started "bunny hopping" when im in 2nd/3rd gear and around the 20 mph mark. Once I get into 4th/5th gear and speed up it stops and she runs smooth. Ive already changed the coil pack, plugs, leads and serviced but none of this as helped cure the problems. The bunny hopping and high fuel consumption both happened around the same time so im thinking there's maybe an electrical fault.?? If anyone else as had this fault and cured it I'd love to hear from you or if anyone knows of a garage experienced in working on the mark 1 Rav, preferably cheaper than a Toyota dealership, please send me or reply to this post with info cheers

Your Rav has a diagnostic socket for reading fault codes but it's not really possible to set up the engine via this socket. It's worth checking if any codes are stored. I suspect that the issue isn't ignition system / electrical and the symptoms you describe align more with a fuelling problem - often it's due to a faulty MAP (manifold absolute pressure sensor). A decent garage should be able to find their way around this engine but I doubt if you'll find anyone who specialises in the 4.1. Diagnosis by replacement can work out expensive and it might be worth getting Toyota to diagnose the issue - this may well be a cheaper / quicker option in the long run.

Thank you for your reply. Im going to ring Toyota today and get some prices for a diagnostic test and hopefully book her in. I totally understand what your saying about in the long run Toyota may not be the most expensive option and I suspect they know and understand a Rav4 better than anywhere else.!! I actually have 2 map sensors somewhere from previous Rav4s ive owned and broke for parts so I may have a swap about and just see if theres any improvement. !!! Thanks again for your reponse.!!
