Turbo Noise

Hi all, this week my wifes 2005 corolla verso 2D4 displayed the TRC, VSC & engine management lights simultaneously. I've had the EGR valve cleaned previously about 20 000 miles ago. After reading some posts, I added a fuel cleaner/additive and then disconnected the Battery for 15 mins. This cleared the indication lights and the car has run exactly the same as always (including when the lights were displayed) with the exception of a high pitch wine noise when the engine is reved between 2000 & 3000 rpm. This can be heard when the car is either stationary or when moving. It appears to me to be the turbo as this noise appears within this rev range, both through acceleration and deceleration. The milage is just under 97 000 miles and is up to date on the service schedule. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, taffy70.

All turbochargers 'whistle', they run at extremely high speeds. Some are louder than others.

Shouldn't do it on the overrun though, unless you have an exhaust leak somewhere.

Would be a good idea to get the error codes read (or buy an OBDII reader and do it yourself) rather than just resetting them if it happens again.

Perhaps a leak on the intercooler, be worth checking all your pipes that lead from your turbo, to ensure none are split,

Is it more of a whistle or more like a squeal?

My Yaris used to make a horrible squealy sound, esp. when cold, but it was just the auxiliary belt slipping due to wear.

Also, when I first bought my current (5-door!) D4D, it had noticeably louder turbo noise than my old (3-door) one, and I just assumed it was the norm, but when I changed the air filter I noticed some moron had put it on wrong and had just forced the airbox closed over it!

With the new one in properly, (with the corners in the right corners!), the turbo sound was back to the same levels as in my old Yaris :) There is something to be said for doing what maintenance you can yourself!

Many thanks to all that have offered advice. On checking the connections I discovered that the large pipe connecting the air filter to the turbo has a split & deformed seal at the turbo end. Refitted as best I could, just waiting to purchase new part to see if that makes a difference. Will update this post when done. Fingers crossed!
