Hi everyone.

I hope i can explain everything and get at least a clue about this because it seems like i just can not find a solution to my avensis and i only bought it 5 days ago and already problems.it is a 2007 model 2.2 diesel with 180 bhp.when i was driving,it suddenly appeared the Battery and fuel filter lights on.they were stopping and the again on the dash board.and also before this happened there was some white smoke comming out but not too smelly.it dissapeared after 1 min.and today i replaced the fuel filter, the mechanic checked the Battery and it was ok.he said he found some water in the old fuel filter.what would be the problem? Because when these lights start flashing when driving, the car is still running fine, it s pulling well and there were no other problems.if anyone could help me with an advice, i would be so happy.and if this is something to worry me in the future? The mechanic said he tested the alternator and he said was ok.any comments would help.thanks

The 2.2 diesel engine is known for cylinder head problems, not just in the Avensis but in all cars fitted with it including Lexus. White smoke can mean water in the combustion chambers so my sceptical mind says someone knew the head gasket was on the way out and sold the car. On a more positive note perhaps the car merely has water in the diesel and only some of it is being picked up by the filter? I'm not familiar with the warning lights on your particular car but often there's a"water in the fuel filter" warning light, although I wouldn't normally expect it to also throw on the Battery light. Have a browse around this site (and elsewhere) for plenty info about the head gasket problem. Toyota extended the warranty to cover this, but only if it had Full Toyota History. I believe it's 7 years, and I can't remember the miles but I think around 100k, I'm sure others will confirm when they see your thread.

If you bought it from a dealer take it back and let them sort it. If not then perhaps wait and see if it settles down now you've fitted the new filter, and in the meantime have a look for signs of oil in the coolant (water), or coolant in the oil. I'd be thinking of having a pressure test done too, for peace of mind.

Although I say above that they're known for head problems, I'm certain there are plenty good ones around too, hopefully yours is one of them :)
