Possible Aircon Compressor.

Hi all I am new to these forums so here we go. I have a 2008 Yaris 1.3 vvt petrol version & when the outside temperature rises as of lately I get a squeak from the car around the engine bay. If I switch on the aircon compressor the squeak goes away, when the cab has cooled down enough & the aircon is switched off after a mile or so the squeak returns. The funny thing is this does not happen during the winter months i:e when air temperature is cold. I have had the car from new & has been a cracking servent to the family with no other faults at all (touch wood). Anyone with ideas on this not serious but niggling problem........................CHEERS JEVVY.

Maybe something simple as belt adjustment or idler pulley or both.

Cheers

Belt & idler pulley checked out ok, squeak disappears when A/C compressor is switched on, funny that.

The aircon compressor has a clutch which disengages drive when the aircon is off. Since it only squeaks when the aircon is off, it would suggest there is a fault with the aircon clutch.

Thanks Madasafish, I reported this fault to the dealership I bought the car from on its last warranty service, all they said was we have checked the A/C & everything is ok. It seems to get worse in hot weather that even we have experienced here in the north east. Thanks for your input . It seems whatever make of car you drive main dealers don't want to know once you have got the vehicle.

I would suggest you keep reporting it and in writing and keep a copy yourself.

There could come a day when any warranty is out and the thing plays up big time.

You may need all the backup info in support of a claim.

The car has been out of warranty for three years now, its just this warm summer when the squeak has become louder. I did mention this to Hodgeson Toyota at the time & they said no problems. It seemed to quieten down between then & now. Maybe I should have kept at them then but like I say it did quieten right down. Thanks for the suggestion.

As you later say it's three years out of warranty that seems a bit harsh. They had a golden opportunity to get some serious money off you for a new compressor - but didn't. Be happy :D

If they had done the job on the last warranty service it wouldn't have cost me a penny. :disgust:

May not be connected in your case but we had the same problem when we bought our 06 plate 1.3

It turned out to be the drive belt - there is a modified belt apparently which was fitted by Mr T under the used car 12 month warranty.

That was nearly three years ago now and no problems since

Some cars are affected others not. Daughter has a 08 1.3 and never had a problem with squeaks. Plenty of air con probs though !!!

Thanks for the suggestion Rob. I still think as per previous posts suggest that it is the compressor as the squeak goes off when the A/C is activated. Like I have said before on the last dealer service before the warranty ran out I reported this & was told all was ok. Its just over these last few weeks of hot weather that problem has reoccurred. Normally when the weather is cooler cant hear a squeak so to say.
