Hi, I have got my toyota yaris hybrid plate 2012 a couple of months ago. Every morning when I started my car to go to work, there is always a harsh sound from the brake when I lifted my foot from it as if the car is trying so hard to move. This only happens in the morning generally when it hasn't been driven for many hours or left overnight. A couple of times , it actually didn't move on the first time I started my car. I had to restart it again and gave it sometime before it actually moved and creating the sound. I don't know if this is actually normal for hybrid car? It feels like the car needs a warm up before going off the road. I spoke to a couple of people with auris hybrid but was told didn't experience similar problem but toyota told me this is normal. I am just wondering if this is normal or anything I could do at all? Many thanks.

The parking brake on my Prius used to seize on whenever I left it overnight. The first movement of the car would free it with a bit of a thump. Didn't cause any problems.

To confirm it is the handbrake sticking, park it one night in gear with handbrake off. If when you get to it in the morning there is not a problem then its the handbrake sticking. Have you got drum brakes on the rear, or are they discs?

H, thank you very much everyone. Hi, Joe I am not really quite sure whether the rear brakes are drum or disc. How could I find out and what the difference will it make to the issue that I am having with the car?

Look at the inside of the wheel. If you can see a shiny (or rusty) disk, you have disk brakes. Drum brakes are enclosed in a sort of large cylinder.

Shoes inside the drum press on the surface to slow the thing down and they sometimes stick.

Disk brakes sometimes seize temporarily if the disks are corroded.

Rocking the vehicle gently usually frees the brakes.

Is the car still under warranty?

Only ask because in your first post you put "but toyota told me this is normal".

I wouldnt think it was normal.

I used to have this 'problem' with my VW Golf. I mean its not a problem, it would happen at least 2-3 times a week, never caused an issue, I just used to ignore it. But its best to get it checked out especially as its under warranty.

Something like this often happens if you don't drive the car after washing - any car with discs, though some may be more prone than others. Water gets trapped between the pads and discs and a bit of local corrosion sticks them together, especially if the handbrake is applied, meaning the 'join' has to be broken when you next move it.

This might happen if the car is left out in a damp atmosphere, or the wind can push rain onto them, or the brakes are cold/damp when you park up for the night.

To test this you could try covering the wheels with a bin bag at night, as long as they are dry, and/or, drive with the brakes lightly applied for say 50m just before you park up to warm and dry the discs and pads.

All cars rear disks rust.

I get the symptoms described when I wash the car wheels and leave it with the handbrake on overnight. The rear pads stick to the disks. Big bang when they are freed.

I agree with you, Michael, that discs rust even after a car wash, and thus can stick.

Sure, these last couple weeks we had some rain, but prior to that the weather was generally dry each day and warm during the night so not even a heavy dew overnight (and it would have to be a heavy dew to affect discs/pads).

My van used to stick even during the summer but that was drums and probably needed a good clean out and lube.

I quite agree - given the time of year it does seem unlikely. But the OP was thin on environmental detail (maybe he drives through a ford to get to his driveway) and in the absence of any other ideas I just put up an hypothesis that could perhaps be tested.

Hi Yaris Folk, This is a simple situation = occurs on Rear Disc Braked Cars, when handbrake applied overnight, or longer periods, in high humidity situation. i.e. Rain, Fog, Snow, Seaside region, etc.

It should not occur when brakes and surroundings are 100% dry. Solution; also noted in the Manual, is to "Park overnight with Handbrke OFF, but the 1st gear engaged".

Note: My 01.2012. 1,33 Yaris 100 Active, showed this "Brake-Sticking" as soon as the rear discs lost their new finish. As I live within range of seawater- mist, and high ambient humidity, car is parked overnight always with 1st gear engaged and handbrake off. After "pressure Car-Wash", drive first 50m slow, with slight braking, to dry the discs. That's it, Drive Safely.

The OP lives in Lancashire. The county where all cotton mills were originally sited as the damp climate prevented the cotton yarn from breaking.

Say no more on the environment then.. it's wet.
